Scientists have developed a new device that takes the help of carbon nanotubes to provide an objective and cost effective way to rate how hot a particular chilli is.

London, May 13 : Scientists have developed a new device that takes the help of carbon nanotubes to provide an objective and cost effective way to rate how hot a particular chilli is.

Clarification: Carbon nanotubes study performed on mice

Weekly reported on a new study that shows some potential for carbon nanotubes to behave like asbestos if inhaled. We failed to report, however, that the study was conducted by injecting carbon nanotubes into the abdomen of mice. Conclusions reached about the inhalation risk of carbon nanotubes were made by researchers involved in the project based on results of the injection regime. There is, as yet, no direct evidence that inhalation of carbon nanotubes poses a health risk, and researchers involved in the study acknowledged that more experimentation is required to fully assess inhalation risk.

Nanotechnology straws - capillary action at the nanoscale

(Nanowerk Spotlight) Various techniques are being developed to enhance the already impressive properties of carbon nanotubes (CNTs) further by combining them with other materials. We have covered plenty of examples in our Spotlights. For instance, encapsulating carbon nanofibers with CNTs transforms cheap commercial carbon nanotubes into highly efficient carbon for electrochemical energy storage applications (Converting conventional nanotubes into superior carbon for batteries). Another study demonstrated that the redox properties of iron and iron oxide particles are tunable via encapsulation within CNTs, suggesting that a host-guest interaction between the confined metal particles and CNTs, which is different from that on the outside of the nanotubes (see: Ethanol production inside carbon nanotubes).

Livermore researchers use carbon nanotubes for molecular transport

FAST FLOW THROUGH CARBON NANOTUBES: The animation starts with the depiction of the water flow through a regular "rough" pipe. The molecules near the wall stick to it and move much slower than the molecules in the middle of the pipe. Colors indicate the speed of the molecules -- green are fast, yellow are slower, red are the slowest. The rough pipe fades and the carbon nanotube appears. All the molecules in the carbon nanotube move fast (green). They do not stick to the surface of the nanotube because that surface is very slippery. The water molecules travel in chains because they interact with each other strongly via hydrogen bonds. These two effects (the slippery nanotube surface and formation of water molecule chains inside the nanotube) combine to produce this phenomenon of ultra-fast flow through carbon nanotubes.

The role of surfactants in carbon nanotube toxicity

(Nanowerk Spotlight) Synthesized carbon nanotubes, especially single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs), are in the form of bundles with other impurities such as catalyst particles and amorphous carbon debris. In order to be useful for many types of applications, for instance in nanoelectronic devices or biomedical applications, SWCNTs need to be purified and dispersed into individual nanotubes. One method to do this is by surfactant stabilization of the hydrophobic nanotube surface, which overcomes the van der Waals forces among the nanotubes and results in suspensions of individual SWCNTs.

Carbon nanotubes may cause cancer, study reveals

A new study conducted by a team of UK and US scientists has revealed the carcinogenic potential of certain carbon nanotubes. In a paper published in Nature Nanotechnology on 20 May, the researchers describe asbestos-like features in long, multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs), when they are inhaled in sufficient quantities.

We’ve all been hearing a million different things about this “new” iPhone that is suppose to be coming out any day now! I recently spoke to one of my friends who works at AT&T and I guess the new gossip going around is that the new iPhone is going to be cheaper than the original. I don’t know about you guys, but I find this hard to believe. The 3G is suppose to be faster, have GPS, a new glossy black cover (that is said to be color changeable), slightly thicker, updated software and the camera is expected to be better. Some Nanotubes Could Cause Cancer

Certain types of carbon nanotubes could cause the same health problems as asbestos, according to the results of two recent studies. In one, published yesterday, tests in mice showed that long and straight multiwalled carbon nanotubes cause the same kind of inflammation and lesions in the type of tissues that surround the lungs that is caused by asbestos. The other study, also done in mice, showed that similar carbon nanotubes eventually led to cancerous tumors.
