Nanowiring using boron clusters: related news

Nanowiring using boron clusters

A model system that could serve as a "blueprint" for graphene-based nanodevices of the future has been put forward by scientists in Italy, Turkey and Germany. The model involves using alternating chains of boron clusters to connect various parts of a semiconducting graphene substrate. The concept is very similar to that routinely employed in silicon-based integrated circuits, but the resulting graphene-based devices would be several orders of magnitude smaller.

Mandrake 10: A Long Time User's Experiences

IconI have been using Linux since 1993. I installed the first version of Slackware on a 16MB 386sx-25. Since then I have been using it almost exclusively on one or more of my PCs. So I consider myself as a bit of an expert. I have been using computers since 1982 mostly PCs, but also VAX mainframes and SPARC systems. Operating systems (and GUIs) I have been using include CP/M, DOS, Windows from Version 2 to XP, Geos, Beos, SCO Unix, Solaris, OS/2 and quite a few Linux Distros.

Using Forms and Items in MIDlets

This is one in a series of tutorial lessons designed to teach you how to write programs using the Sun Java Wireless Toolkit for CLDC. The first lesson was titled Getting Started with MIDlets and the Sun Java Wireless Toolkit for CLDC. The previous lesson was titled Using Lists in MIDlets (see Resources).

Build a Web Chat Application using ASP.Net 3.5, LINQ and AJAX

We will build a very simple web chat application using the latest ASP.Net 3.5, LINQ, and AJAX from scratch just for fun and see how fast we can build it using LINQ. The web chat will: be accessible anywhere, be flicker-free, not use frames, not use application variables. More...

Creating JavaFX Script Objects and Using Them in Java Programs

Michael Heinrichs has written a Sun Developer Network article on Using JavaFX Script Objects in Java Programs. This process is a fairly easy one, he maintains, because JavaFX Script was designed to enable the use of Java objects and because the necessary instruments are built right into the language. He demonstrates possible ways to create JavaFX objects and to use them in Java code. According to Heinrichs, the first issue to address in designing a system that includes components written in JavaFX Script is the decision about which technology to use for the startup. There is, he writes, no correct answer; that depends on the context. He recommends using a factory as a means of creating JavaFX objects from Java code without relying on calling the constructor, which is a practice that is typically discouraged.

Nintendo, McDonald's, NTT to test data service using DS game consoles

Nintendo Co, McDonald’s Holdings Co (Japan) and a subsidiary of NTT Corp said Monday they will launch a trial run Tuesday of data distributing services using Nintendo DS portable game consoles. Using the wireless communication function of the DS console at designated locations, including McDonald’s outlets, game console users can download special software for viewing data offered by McDonald’s and NTT Broadband Platform Inc, such as information on sales campaigns and merchandise, news and mass transit information free of charge.

As customers start using mobile devices, they are using fewer VPN-enabled desktops. Are there new VPN solutions that can be offered for mobile workers?

Most laptop users can be satisfied by IPsec or SSL remote access VPNs. But workers who carry PDAs, smartphones, point-of-sale terminals, barcode scanners, and other mobile devices require different solutions.

Web Development and Design in London: Using Divs versus using Tables.

Most Web Development professionals in London have reached a crossroad in website design which will influence the way they proceed with current and future web design projects.

DIY Solar Resources?

TihSon writes "I'm building a large shed out back and I want to power the lighting using a surplus solar panel. In searching for information on how to go about this, I have found a lot of rough DIY guides for various projects that are close to my goal. But none seem to explain the reasoning and theory behind using solar panels, so hacking their project to suit my own needs could be pretty much hit-and-miss. I don't want to do a hacked-up job, and future solar projects are not out of the question, so something a bit more in-depth is required. Do you have suggestions for books or Web sites you have used to learn the ins and outs of using solar panels? Something that starts with basic theory and ends with the ability to wire a house would be perfect.

University Makes Students Take Copyright Quiz To Get Timed Access To P2P

Broadband Reports points us to a rather unique attempt by Missouri University of Science & Technology to deal with the fact that the RIAA/MPAA are upset with students at the university for using file sharing apps. It's using traffic shaping apps to block access to P2P systems... but, it will give students timed access if they first successfully complete a quiz about copyright issues. You need to get a perfect score (or no BitTorrent for you!) and you get six hours, which they hope you're now using for legal file sharing (though, they don't check). If you want more time, you need to ace the quiz again (the questions change). You can get up to 8 "passes" per month.

Howto Select Fastest Mirror in Debian

If you want to select Fastest Mirror in Debian follow this tutorial and this is very helpful if you want to download and install your debian packages,Updates .netselect-apt automatically creates a sources.list file for using with apt for the specified distribution by downloading the list of Debian mirrors using wget and choosing the fastest servers (both US and non-US) using netselect. The output file is written to OUTFILE.

Forrester survey discovers that virtually no one uses open source (?!?)

I generally like Forrester's work, but this survey flies in the face of every piece of research on open source that I've seen in the last five years...including research from Forrester. Also, as the research itself finds, often its survey respondents are using open source even when they don't know it: Nearly half of those surveyed by Forrester who are using open-source frameworks (e.g., Spring) still claim they are not using open source.

Custom design or templates?

That is the question that Foamers.net asks. Is it better to build your own custom design or use a template? Personally, I would have to give the wishy-washy answer of "it depends". If you're a good or great designer, then using a template wouldn't make sense. But what if you only have a few hours to get a site up and live? Using a pre-built template might make sense even for a pro designer in that case. Or if you're just starting out, using a template that you're allowed to modify might be a great way to learn Web design and new techniques that you weren't familiar with. But taking the time to build a site from scratch and doing all the testing is one of the best ways to learn HTML, CSS, and Web design.

Google's Gears Gains Ground

Google's open-source development tool is seeing adoption grow.SAN FRANCISCO—One of Google's primary goals is to advance the capabilities of the browser and the company has done so with its Gears offline-application-enabling technology. Advancing the browser also means adoption by key players. At the Google I/O conference here May 28, Allen Hurff, vice president of engineering at social networking player MySpace, said MySpace is using Gears to make its site and products easier to use. "It gives you full text capability and a SQL database on the client machine" for local storage, Hurff said. "Today, MySpace is launching enhanced functionality for MySpace mail using Gears," Chris Prince, a Google software engineer, said in a May 28 blog post. "They are using the original Gears Database API with Full Text Search to enable fast and easy search

Using NTSYSV To Manage Linux Services

"Picking up where we left off in yesterday's post regarding using chkconfig to manage Linux run levels, today we're going to take a look at another common, and helpful, tool you can find on Redhat, Fedora and other such similar Linux distro's, named ntsysv. Actually, we'll be looking at two commands, since there's a slight dependency (which we'll get to before this post is over) between ntsysv and another command named service.

Using JavaFX Script Objects in Java Programs

The seamless integration of JavaFX Script with pure Java code is one of the most interesting features of JavaFX Script. Using Java objects within JavaFX Script is simple, because JavaFX Script was designed with this feature in mind and the necessary instruments have been build into the language. This article will present possible ways to create JavaFX objects and use them in Java code.
