Nanotechnology Venture Capital Spending Out of Sync With Returns: related news

Nanotechnology Venture Capital Spending Out of Sync With Returns

(Nanowerk News) Venture capital (VC) firms invested $702 million in nanotechnology start-ups last year across 61 deals, slightly down from $738 million across 73 deals in 2006. But this VC spending is sharply out of sync with investment returns. Although application-oriented life-sciences companies have delivered the majority of VC returns in nanotech, VC firms consistently devote most of their funding to companies in other areas, according to a new report from Lux Research entitled “How Venture Capitalists Are Misplaying Nanotech.”

Nanotechnology funding strategy in Germany shows a growing focus on sustainability aspects

(Nanowerk Spotlight) The European Union currently spends about 740 million Euros (roughly $1.2 billion) annually in public funding on nanotechnology research. This is almost on par with the U.S. National Nanotechnology Initiative (NNI) budget of $1.28 billion (2007). Almost 40% of public EU nanotechnology funding takes place in Germany and it is estimated that about half of the European companies active in nanotechnology are based in Germany, making the country the clear nanotechnology leader in Europe. Germany’s strengths include a well structured R&D infrastructure and a high level of research in the various subfields of nanotechnology. The industrial base for utilizing the results of this research is also in place. About 700 companies are currently involved in the development, application, and sales and marketing of nanotechnological p

England enigma Harmison aims to defy his critics

Steve Harmison looks out over the beautiful Wellington seascape and considers his response with care. The proposition is that following his omission from the England side he has called home for the past five years, the 6ft 5in paceman who spearheaded the Ashes victory in 2005 is finished as a Test bowler, out of favour, out of chances, out of the team, out of time. Out.

TRAC 32: Nanotechnology in Medicine

Nanotechnology has exploded onto the scientific scene in the last few years and has impacted nearly every area of scientific research. The infancy of nanotechnology began in materials science laboratories. The field of nanotechnology has matured and is now at the forefront of medical research. Nanomedicine has been heralded as the next “big thing”. Popular literature promises tiny machines that will have a huge impact on disease and aging. The reality is that nanomedicine can be divided into three basic categories tiny machines, diagnostics, and therapeutic delivery. This course will discuss all of these nanotechnology applications and focus on diagnostics and therapeutics.

A NANOTECHNOLOGY UNDERWRITERS LABORATORY REVISITED

Previously I have proposed that the Nanotechnology industry, led by the NanoBusiness Alliance (that industry supported responsible representative of what is good and beneficial about nanotech in society), and the all companies in nanotech (at all links in the value chain) create a NUL - a Nanotechnology Underwriters Laboratory - similar to the UL - Underwriters Laboratory- used by the electrical supply industry, and establish a formally recognized environmental qualification and safety stamp of approval called the NULL - Nanotechnology Underwriters Laboratory Listing. In NUL, all pending nanotechnology containing products are rigorously and responsibly tested for performance and for immediate and long-term health effects and safety, using scientific and objective protocols of acceptance and release to the market.
