Patients who want to access their lab test results may soon be able to simply Google them. Quest Diagnostics (Madison, N.J.) has announced that it will collaborate with the Internet giant on Google Health, a pilot electronic health record (EHR) system that will allow users to manage their health information online. Google Health was launched last month at the Health Information Management Systems Society trade show. In addition to Quest, Google Health’s future partners include Aetna, Wal-Mart, the University of California at San Francisco, the American Medical Association, and Cedars-Sinai Medical Center.

Public health agencies increasingly use electronic means to acquire, use, maintain, and store personal health information. Electronic data formats can improve performance of core public health functions, but potentially threaten privacy because they can be easily duplicated and transmitted to unauthorized people. Although such security breaches do occur, electronic data can be better secured than paper records, because authentication, authorization, auditing, and accountability can be facilitated. Public health professionals should collaborate with law and information technology colleagues to assess possible threats, implement updated policies, train staff, and develop preventive engineering measures to protect information.

Do investments in the social determinants of health (such as early childhood development, educational opportunities, the quality of jobs, safe communities, family income) have economic consequences? If so, what particular investments have the strongest relationships with economic outcomes? In April 2007, CPRN, on behalf of the Public Health Agency of Canada (PHAC), convened a roundtable of national and international experts to explore the economic case for financing the social determinants of health, building on the 2006 CPRN paper Economic Arguments for Action on the Social Determinants of Health, by David Hay. In this report, Developing a Canadian Economic Case for Financing the Social Determinants of Health, David Hay provides a synopsis of the available research and the roundtable discussion.

(Nanowerk Spotlight) Following just two days after we wrote about the food industry's deafening silence on their nanotechnology research and development (Food nanotechnology - how the industry is blowing it), the Investor Environmental Health Network today released a report that demonstrates that sectors affected by product toxicity risks are doing a poor job of informing shareholders of market risks they face due to toxic chemicals in their products. The report specifically addresses the situation for companies dealing with nanomaterials by noting that manufacturers are not disclosing the evidence of health risks of nanotechnology products, nor the lack of adequate product testing prior to their sales.

The nation’s lab testing leader has joined forces with the country’s Internet search giant to provide consumers with secure online access to diagnostic test results through Google Health, a Web-based personal health record (PHR) pilot currently in development. Google Health appears similar to two other online PHR initiatives being developed by IT leaders: Microsoft’s HealthVault and Revolution Health. Founded by America Online co-founder Steve Case, Revolution Health operates a consumer health information Web site that allows consumers to create and manage an online PHR.

Researchers at the UI Nanoscience and Nanotechnology Institute have been given a $1.2 million research grant to study the toxicity of inhaled nanomaterials. The grant, which was awarded by the National Institutes of Health, will be used to explore the dangers these man-made microscopic materials pose to human health, especially to the workers who manufacture them. Nanomaterials are small structures that can range between 1 and 100 nanometers -a nanometer is a billionth of a meter. These materials can be found in every-day materials such as cosmetics, lotions, and rain-repellent products. "We want to determine a relationship between nanoparticle properties and health," said UI Professor Vicki Grassian, the director of the UI Nanoscience and Nanotechnology Institute.

Researchers at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health have conducted the largest nationwide study on the acute health effects of coarse particle pollution. Coarse particles are airborne pollutants that fall between 2.5 and 10 microns in diameter. These particles are larger than fine particles (less than 2.5 microns) and are produced by processes such as mechanical grinding, windblown dust and agriculture. These particles are of interest from both public health and regulatory perspectives.
