Nano-materials Could Protect Spacecraft and Satellites From Debris

Space junk in Earth orbit is becoming a big problem (here's an previous UT article that illustrates the problem.) If the International Space Station or an operating communications or science satellite were struck by debris such as an old satellite, launch vehicle parts, or even something as small as a paint chip, it could mean disaster. Space debris also threatens the lives of astronauts and the launch of new satellites today, says Dr. Noam Eliaz, Head of the Biomaterials and Corrosion Laboratory at the School of Mechanical Engineering at Tel Aviv University. An expert in materials science and engineering, Dr. Eliaz is working to create and test new nano-materials and polymers to protect satellites and astronauts alike.

Low-Impact Mating System for Docking Spacecraft

A document describes a low-impact mating system suitable for both docking (mating of two free-flying spacecraft) and berthing (in which a robot arm in one spacecraft positions an object for mating with either spacecraft). The low-impact mating system is fully androgynous: it mates with a copy of itself, i.e., all spacecraft and other objects to be mated are to be equipped with identical copies of the system. This aspect of the design helps to minimize the number of unique parts and to standardize and facilitate mating operations. The system includes a closed-loop feedback control subsystem that actively accommodates misalignments between mating spacecraft, thereby attenuating spacecraft dynamics and mitigating the need for precise advance positioning of the spacecraft.

Next iPod Nano Sighting, Plus That iPhone Nano Rumor

Colleague Cliff Edwards, next door on Tech Beat reports having seen a device he theorizes is a next-generation iPod nano, sporting a touch screen. (Sorry no pictures.) He argues pretty convincingly that its a likely change for the fall. I’ve been thinking that the transition to the current nano model, nicknamed “little fatty” had happened too recently for it to be time for a major change to the nano. But then there’s the issue of consistent look and feel. If the iPod touch is now the flagship of the iPod family, and it looks like an iPhone, then shouldn’t the nano also look more like an iPhone as well, and as such sport a touch screen? Makes perfect sense to me.

ESA spacecraft set for flyby of Steins asteroid

Steins is Rosettas first nominal scientific target. The spacecraft encountered the asteroid in the course of its first incursion into the main asteroid belt located between the orbits of Mars and Jupiter, while on its way to Comet 67P/Churyumov-Gerasimenko, which is scheduled for 2014. Kodiak Star Spacecraft - , USA

Kodiak Star, the first planned orbital launch from the new Kodiak Launch Complex in Alaska is a NASA collaborative mission with the Department of Defense (DoD). The launch took place in September 2001. The payload consists of four small satellites to be launched aboard a Lockheed Martin Athena I launch vehicle. NASA's spacecraft in the Kodiak Star mission is Starshine 3. Starshine 3 is a satellite programme developed by the Rocky Mountain NASA Space Grant Consortium.
