Nanotechnology funding strategy in Germany shows a growing focus on sustainability aspects

(Nanowerk Spotlight) The European Union currently spends about 740 million Euros (roughly $1.2 billion) annually in public funding on nanotechnology research. This is almost on par with the U.S. National Nanotechnology Initiative (NNI) budget of $1.28 billion (2007). Almost 40% of public EU nanotechnology funding takes place in Germany and it is estimated that about half of the European companies active in nanotechnology are based in Germany, making the country the clear nanotechnology leader in Europe. Germany’s strengths include a well structured R&D infrastructure and a high level of research in the various subfields of nanotechnology. The industrial base for utilizing the results of this research is also in place. About 700 companies are currently involved in the development, application, and sales and marketing of nanotechnological p

State gives companies $1.5M for nanotechnology growth

Breath-analysis lasers made with nanotechnology components would make the technology smaller, simpler and more cost effective, said Patrick McCann, chief executive officer of Norman-based Ekips Technologies Inc. Tuesday, Ekips won a $350,252, three-year nanotechnology applications award to do just that. Ekips was one of eight Oklahoma companies or researchers awarded a total of $1.25 million in state funding to apply nanotechnology to their manufacturing processes. The Oklahoma Center for the Advancement of Science and Technology announced the winners of the Oklahoma Nanotechnology Applications Project, which is in its second year. The nanotechnology project was created by the Legislature and administered by OCAST.

Gov't sets nanotechnology goals until 2015

Russia's share of the global nanotechnology market is expected to reach 3 percent in 2015, First Deputy Prime Minister Sergei Ivanov told the Federation Council today. He added that the sales of Russia's nanotechnology products would amount to some RUB 900bn (approx. USD 38.25bn). Ivanov noted that roughly RUB 180bn (approx. USD 7.65bn) would be allocated for nanotechnology development, while VTB and Russian Venture Company's programs provided additional opportunities to make nanotechnology products more profitable. He also stated that the priority areas of nanotechnology development had been chosen.

Engineers Make Good Terrorists?

An anonymous reader writes "Engineers' focus and attention to details, along with their perceived lack of social skills, make them ideal targets to be recruited as terrorists, according to EETimes. Planning skills make engineers good 'field operatives' was written up by Raphael Perl, who heads the Action against Terrorism Unit of Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe. He offers that 'Engineers ideally make excellent strategic planners, and they make excellent field operatives. They think differently from how other people think.' That may sound like a stereotype, but Perl claims that 'because of those traits, terrorist groups actively recruit engineers.' He says that Al-Qaeda has widely acknowledged that a significant number of the group's top leadership had engineering backgrounds.

10 Satellites Launched in Record Setting Mission for India (Video)

India’s space agency sent a record 10 satellites into Earth orbit with a single launch early Monday. The Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle (PSLV) rocket ejected all the satellites within minutes of each other after liftoff from the Sriharikota space station in southern India. Initial signals indicated all the satellites were working normally. India is seeking to compete with other space-faring nations for commercial launch services, and this mission's success demonstrates India's ability to launch multiple payloads into precise orbit. The flight breaks the previous record of eight satellites launched at once by a Russian rocket, according to Indian news reports.

TRAC 32: Nanotechnology in Medicine

Nanotechnology has exploded onto the scientific scene in the last few years and has impacted nearly every area of scientific research. The infancy of nanotechnology began in materials science laboratories. The field of nanotechnology has matured and is now at the forefront of medical research. Nanomedicine has been heralded as the next “big thing”. Popular literature promises tiny machines that will have a huge impact on disease and aging. The reality is that nanomedicine can be divided into three basic categories tiny machines, diagnostics, and therapeutic delivery. This course will discuss all of these nanotechnology applications and focus on diagnostics and therapeutics.

A NANOTECHNOLOGY UNDERWRITERS LABORATORY REVISITED

Previously I have proposed that the Nanotechnology industry, led by the NanoBusiness Alliance (that industry supported responsible representative of what is good and beneficial about nanotech in society), and the all companies in nanotech (at all links in the value chain) create a NUL - a Nanotechnology Underwriters Laboratory - similar to the UL - Underwriters Laboratory- used by the electrical supply industry, and establish a formally recognized environmental qualification and safety stamp of approval called the NULL - Nanotechnology Underwriters Laboratory Listing. In NUL, all pending nanotechnology containing products are rigorously and responsibly tested for performance and for immediate and long-term health effects and safety, using scientific and objective protocols of acceptance and release to the market.

Baosteel succeeds in nanotechnology trials

It is reported that the metal surface organization nanotechnology reconstruction project which is led by Baosteel and ranked into national high tech plan has made significant progress. Metal roller to be nanotechnology on surface can comprehensively utilize nano material's high hardness and coarse crystal's high plastic to significantly improve the roller's wear resistance and anti fatigue life. Since 2000, scholars at home and abroad have proposed various methods of making nano metal but most of them are remain in the basic research stage. Through many rounds of production industrial test, the key technology, equipment operation and the production performance all have reached the desired objectives, the hardness, wear resistance, and fatigue life of the roller of surface nanotechnology have been greatly improved.
