Graphene has record breaking strength: related news

Graphene has record-breaking strength

Graphene is the strongest material in the world, according to new experiments done by researchers at Columbia University in the US. The secret to the material's extraordinary strength, says the team, lies in the robustness of the covalent carbon-carbon bond and the fact that the graphene monolayers tested were defect-free.

Nanotechnology: Graphene takes on carbon nanotubes

Carbon nanotubes might have a cheaper, less controversial alternative in graphene, a single-layer flat sheet of carbon atoms that promotes strength and conductivity. Researchers at Northwestern University published their findings in Nature Nanotechnology, reporting that the breakthrough was made possible by isolating the proper kind of graphene sheet. According to a report from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology Review, having a few hydroxyl groups or oxygen atoms loose on the surface of graphene allows the material to link to polymers and disperse evenly. Researchers at Princeton, who coauthored the paper, were able to generate this form of graphene by expanding graphite oxide rapidly at high temperatures.

Peaches Geldof, John Cusack, John Woo

John Woo's "Red Cliff" has set a box office record for a domestic movie in China, Reuters reported. The film, which has earned about 302 million yuan, or $44 million, since it opened on July 10, surpassed the previous domestic record set by "Curse of the Golden Flower," according to a report on Sohu.com, a Chinese Web site. The budget for the Woo film, $80 million, made it China's most expensive. "Red Cliff," which stars Tony Leung and Takeshi Kaneshiro, will open the Tokyo International Film Festival on Oct. 18. "Titanic," which holds the box office record in China, earned about $53 million.

Wii moves past Xbox 360 in the USA says NDP

The North American market has been the stronghold of Xbox 360. It was out far before the competition and as a native company many found Microsoft's new video game console to be a trustworthy product. Xbox 360 has been the most sold console in the USA since the launch, but Nintendo has ended that era according to NDP Research. After only 20 months on the market it has sold 10.9 million Nintendo Wii consoles throughout the USA. This is just thousands more than the number of Xbox 360 consoles sold in the USA, which has been on the market for 32 months. I think we can conclude that Nintendo was right not to get involved in the tech war between Microsoft and Sony.

A Year of GPLv3

javipas writes "GPLv3 and LGPLv3 were released one year ago, on 29 June 2007. Palamida, who tracks Open Source projects, has made a study of the current situation of these licenses along with AGPLv3, which was released later, in November. The number of projects that have made the transition to these licenses has grown over the last months, and it seems than AGPLv3 has captured a great interest lately. Black Duck Software, a company that tracks Open Source projects too, has made its own study with similar results, and although GPLv3 and its variants have a good adoption rate, the interviews published on the Palamida site (Stallman, Chris Di Bona) show that the acceptance of GPLv3 has still a long way to walk."

Sub-$100 Laptops Have Finally Arrived

Roman Phalanx writes "OLPC had promised that it would be possible to mass produce a sub-$100 laptop. The folks at OLPC tried to realize that dream by re-imagining what a laptop looks like. How large of screen and keyboard it has. What OS runs on the laptop. Now that OLPC has decided to super size their systems to run Windows XP, the $100 price point has slipped beyond their reach. A Chinese firm has realized that dream. Taking the best from both the OLPC and EeePC. They ditched x86 compatibility and switched to a MIPS architecture to further reduce production costs. HiVision has managed to create a UMPC that sells right now for $120.00. They say they have refined the manufacturing process and have learned from building this laptop how to mass produce a laptop that will sell for $98.

Microsoft Says Google Is Years Behind on Privacy - Draws attention as IE8 enters new beta

Microsoft executive Peter Cullen says that Google might have some great products but that they are about ten years behind Microsoft in terms of protecting people’s privacy online. One cited example is the problem that Google has had with Street Views capturing photos of people that they don’t want online, a problem Google has dismissed by saying that anyone could take those same pictures and put them on the Internet. Cullen says that Microsoft has built privacy into its core design and that Google is going to need to do the same thing as it grows. In fact, Microsoft is trying to use its privacy tools against Google; the latest beta version of Internet Explorer 8 has a privacy mode that has the potential to keep even Google from collecting information to use in ad targeting.

China Has Largest On-Line Population

Smivs writes "China now has the world's largest net-using population, say official figures. More than 253 million people in the country are now online, according to statistics from the China Internet Network Information Center (CNNIC). About 95% of those going online connect via high-speed links. Take up of broadband has been boosted by deals offered by China's fixed line phone firms as they fight to win customers away from mobile operators. Despite having a greater number of people online, China's net economy still has a long way to go to match or exceed that of the US or even that of South Korea. Figures from Analysis International said China's net firms reported total revenues of $5.9bn (£2.96bn) in 2007. By contrast net advertising revenue alone for US firms in 2007 stood at $21.
