According to Businesweek, HP has been quietly working on two projects aimed at bypassing unpopular features in Vista and possibly competing with Apple down the line. The first involves developing software that modifies Vista to make it easier to use. That much has been confirmed. However, rumor has it that a second "Skunk Works" operation has been going on behind closed doors that has a much loftier goal—building a customized replacement OS based on the Linux platform.

Hello, it has been more than three years since the last "Bits from the Debian GNU/Hurd porters"[1], high time for an update on the port. * Snapshot releases Three new snapshot releases have been done by Philip Charles, K14, K15 (which was only done as an updated mini CD-ISO, not a full snapshot), and K16. K16 has been released[2] on December 18th, 2007 featuring four CDs or two DVDs. Additionally, it also features a ready-to-go qemu-image[3] for the first time. K16 was also the first snapshot which included TLS (Thread Local Storage), a requirement for modern glibcs. New ported packages include Qt3, Qt4, SDL and Emacs22. * Base and toolchain status Currently, most base packages are current, with the notable exception of util-linux, which has been a big problem over the last years.

So I know my updateage lately has been pretty crappy, and I wanted to explain a little. I have another blog, one I just recently started, and which deals with everything, not just makeup. Since I haven't been wearing a lot of makeup lately, and a bunch of other things have been going on, I've been posting some things over there but not had a lot of material to post here. So I just thought I'd direct you over to http://hwaet-hwaet.blogspot.com/, and if there hasn't been any activity over here for a while, perhaps more is happening in other, non-makeup-related areas of my life which are being blogged about over there. It's a shame I don't have any makeup posts right now, but I can't get the videos I have to upload properly, and I did do some minor hauling but it's all been shipped to the US : ( International shipping is hella expensive, so

reporter writes "HIV is the virus that causes Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome (AIDS). Until now, HIV has no cure and has led to the deaths of over 25 million people. However, a possible cure has appeared. Dr. Gero Hutter, a brilliant physician in Germany, replaced the bone marrow of an HIV patient with the bone marrow of a donor who has natural immunity to HIV. The new bone marrow in the patient then produced immune-system cells that are immune to HIV. Being unable to hijack any immune cell, the HIV has simply disappeared. The patient has been free of HIV for about 2 years. Some physicians at UCLA have developed a similar therapy and plan to commercialize it."

Glaciers, half a mile thick and tens of miles long, have been identified on Mars, Science magazine reported yesterday. The presence of ice on the red planet was known, but it is the first time such quantities have been identified away from the poles. Already Nasa is speculating that they could provide water for future missions. But for every step forward in space there is one back, and the robotic lander Phoenix has returned to the ashes. After nearly six months of the Martian summer spent exploring the northern plains and scooping up handfuls - clawfuls? - of permafrosted soil, Phoenix's search for organic molecules that could just prove beyond doubt that there had once been life there has been abandoned. Overwhelmed by dust and the low light from the winter sun, no signals have been received for a fortnight.

hackingbear writes "The National Debt Counter, erected in 1989 when the U.S. debt was 'merely' a tiny $2.7 trillion, has been moving so much that it recently ran out of digits to display the ballooning figure: $10,150,603,734,720, or roughly $10.2 trillion, as of Saturday afternoon. To accommodate the extra '1,' the clock was hacked: the '1' from "$10.2" has been moved left to the LCD square once occupied solely by the digital dollar sign. A non-digital, improvised dollar sign has been pasted next to the '1.' It will be replaced in 2009 with a new clock able to track debt up to a quadrillion dollars, which is a '1' followed by 15 zeros. That should be good enough for a few more months at least, I believe." Adds reader MarkusQ, "I know Dick Cheney has assured us that 'Deficits don't matter' but I can't help wondering if we should be fixing

mallumax writes "The truth is, iTunes is an average music player. Though the UI is simple and good like most Apple products, it has lagged in features compared to music players available on Linux and Windows. A feature as basic as monitoring a folder and adding the latest music files to the library is unavailable in iTunes. There are no plugins or themes. Despite the many faults, many of us continued to use iTunes because of the lack of options available. But today the wait is finally over. Not one, but two music players have become credible contenders. Songbird: An open source music player which has been in the works for more than 2 years has finally released its 1.0 Release Candidate builds.
