Wal-Mart's MP3 store now offers Warner Music MP3s alongside tracks from EMI and independent labels.

Wal-Mart Going Hardline on DRM-Free Online Music Store; SonyBMG and WMG Holdouts

Wal-Mart (NYSE: WMT), whose online music efforts haven’t exactly caught fire among consumers, is now trying a hardline stance on MP3 downloads, ditching Windows DRM-laden downloads that it used to sell before. What that means is that songs from Universal Music Group and EMI artists are the only ones available on the online music store, as SonyBMG and Warner Music Group (NYSE: WMG) have held their ground on DRM till now. Apple vaults over Wal-Mart to become No. 1 U.S. music retailer

Apple says a new consumer study shows its iTunes online music store vaulted past Wal-Mart Stores in February to become the top overall music retailer in the United States. Apple said Thursday that consumer surveys conducted by market research firm NPD Group show iTunes' music sales surpassed those of the discount retailer in January and February. ITunes has sold more than 4 billion tracks since its launch in 2003, thanks in part to the popularity of its iPod portable music players. The NPD surveys count every 12 digital downloads as one CD. They exclude mobile music sales. A call to NPD was not immediately returned.

Ars celebrates iTunes Store's birthday with our own wishlist

Happy 5th Birthday, iTunes Store! Photo CC Daniel Catt. Just five years ago today, Apple unveiled the iTunes Music Store, intended to be the best solution for online music distribution. Since then, the name has changed to simply iTunes Store as it offers an array of audio books, movies, and other media in addition to music. In the last five years, the iTunes Store has gone from 20,000 tracks to over 10 million, and now has over 50 million users in 22 countries worldwide. Consistently claiming a large majority of download sales and recently becoming the top music distributor in the US, the iTunes Store is one of the best online sources for legal music and other media.

Wal-Mart shoves Linux PCs off store shelves, not web site

Wal-Mart's experiment with selling cheap Linux-based PCs in its stores has apparently come to a close. Starting last October, the retail giant stocked desktops from the Green PC line manufactured by Everex. That stock ultimately sold out, but Wal-Mart has apparently decided not to refresh it. The Associated Press quotes a company spokesperson, referring to the machines, as saying, "This really wasn't what our customers were looking for." The news isn't all bad for Everex, however, as Wal-Mart's online store will continue to carry the current Green PC desktop and the company's compact, Linux-based laptop, the Cloudbook.

MySpace Music store to take on iTunes, including mobile downloads

myspace-music1.jpgMySpace has just announced a high-profile move into the digital music retailing space, to compete head-on with Apple’s iTunes. It’s called MySpace Music, and is a joint venture with major labels Sony BMG, Universal Music Group and Warner Music Group. They’re describing it as a “fully integrated 360 degree global music solution”. Whatever that is.No, I’ll tell you what it is. It goes beyond MySpace’s existing music features - streaming tracks on bands’ profiles - and is basically a platform for artists and labels to sell music and other content on the MySpace Music site, on band profiles, and through regular MySpace users’ profiles too. It includes DRM-free song downloads (so they’ll work on your phone), but also a mobile storefront run by Jamba, which like MySpace is owned by News Corporation.

Must a CD Cost $15.99?

scionite0 sends us to Rolling Stone for an in-depth article on Wal-Mart and the music business. Wal-Mart is the largest music retailer selling "an estimated one out of every five major-label albums" in the US. Wal-Mart willingly loses money selling CDs for less than $10 in order to draw customers into the store, but they are tired of taking a loss on CDs. The mega-retailer is telling the major record labels to lower the price of CDs or risk losing retail space to DVDs and video games. (Scroll to the bottom of the article for a breakdown of where exactly the money goes on a $15.99 album sale.) "[A Wal-Mart spokesman said:] 'The record industry needs to refine their business models, because the consumer is the ultimate arbitrator. And the consumer feels music isn't properly priced.

iTunes briefly tops Wal-Mart as No. 1 in US

iTunes for at least a short while has been single largest outlet for music sales in the US, according to new data collected by The NPD Group's MusicWatch Survey conducted in January. The digital store at the time accounted for 19 percent of all music bought in the country versus 15 percent for Wal-Mart's combined in-store and online sales. Best Buy managed 13 percent, while Amazon sat further back at 6 percent despite offering the second-largest digital store in the US. RealNetworks' Rhapsody was the second digital-only store in the market but commands just 1 percent of the US marketplace.

Wal-Mart focuses on MP3, but without Sony BMG and Warner

Sony BMG and Warner's music is missing from Wal-Mart's online store, which has been recently redesigned to feature its catalog of DRM-free music.

Apple eclipses Wal-Mart in US music sales

Apple's online music store, iTunes, has eclipsed Wal-Mart as the biggest music retailer in the US, in a further sign that CD sales are being savaged by the growth of music downloads.

Wal-Mart Switches to MP3-Format Only

When we last visited Wal-Mart's attempt at DRM-free music, they had only managed to get EMI and Universal Music Group signed up for the DRM-free portion of their store. They've now decided to go all-MP3, but they're still stuck without Warner Music Group and Sony BMG, which are unfortunately the top two record labels.

In-store digital music

To acquire music you can walk into a store and buy it or you can download it, and probably most people feel they’re covered with those two options. Sony BMG Music, however, wants you to have a third choice: go to a store, buy a Platinum MusicPass and then go back home and download the music.
