Following on the heels of Real's Rhapsody MP3 store, Verizon today expanded its VCast Music store to include both MP3s and the Rhapsody subscription service. The former lets users of Verizon's PC software as well as any MP3-supporting cellphone on the company's 3G network download unprotected songs that can be used as the customer likes; that includes loading content on to phones that wouldn't otherwise support VCast songs or to outside software and devices, including iPods.

AFCyber writes "The Air Force on Monday suspended all efforts related to development of a program to become the dominant service in cyberspace, according to knowledgeable sources. Top Air Force officials put a halt to all activities related to the establishment of the Cyber Command, a provisional unit that is currently part of the 8th Air Force at Barksdale Air Force Base in Louisiana, sources told Nextgov. An internal Air Force e-mail obtained by Nextgov said, 'Transfers of manpower and resources, including activation and re-assignment of units, shall be halted.' Establishment of the Cyber Command will be delayed until new senior Air Force leaders, including Chief of Staff Norton Schwartz, sworn in today, have time to make a final decision on the scope and mission of the command.

Verizon and Google are finalizing a partnership that would turn over Verizon's mobile search and advertising to Google. Verizon considered a deal with Microsoft, but decided it wanted Google to put its search bar on device home screens because it "could prove attractive to consumers who reflexively use the Internet search engine on their PCs," reports the Wall Street Journal, citing people familiar with the matter.

The BlackBerry Thunder now has a specific release date and over-the-air music downloads, if a leak is found to be accurate. Research in Motion's first-ever touch BlackBerry is now purportedly due to launch with Verizon on October 8th and will have access to Verizon's version of RealNetworks' Rhapsody service. The feature may supply a technical advantage over the iPhone, which is both prevented from downloading whole songs outside of Wi-Fi and must pay per track rather than getting a flat rate for songs.

Google and Verizon haven’t been on the best of terms in the past, clashing over issues like Net neutrality and open spectrum access (see “Google to FCC: Verizon is mucking up our cunning plan“), but when it comes to search, it looks like the mobile carrier is about to yield to the second half of the “if you can’t beat ‘em” adage. The Wall Street Journal reports the two companies are closing in on a deal that would make Google the default search provider on Verizon devices (perhaps even winning a spot on the home screen of Verizon handsets) in exchange for a slice of the ad revenue. The move would be a tacit admission of what Verizon customers already know — the current search options from Verizon are an overly complicated mess.

NEWYORK (Agencies): US mobile service provider Verizon Communications Inc. is nearing an agreement with Google Inc. on a wide-ranging partnership, the Wall Street Journal said, citing people familiar with the situation. The deal under discussion would make Google the default search provider on Verizon devices and give it a share of ad revenue, the paper said. The deal is not yet final and the two sides are still negotiating on key issues, such as Google's desire to save information from user cellphone searches, it added. The online search giant has reportedly been in talks with the number-two US mobile carrier over a possible alliance for almost a year now. Verizon and Google are hoping to conclude the discussions in the next few weeks and the mobile carrier eventually wants to put the Google search bar on the home screen of its phones, t

eldavojohn writes "In an effort to combat air pollution, a Dutch town has paved some of its streets with air-purifying concrete. It contains a titanium dioxide-based additive that utilizes sunlight to turn car exhaust into harmless nitrates. It was shown to do this in a lab and now the scientists are interested in just how much this will affect the air quality around the road. They will sample the air quality by a normal road and by this newly paved one."
