myspace-music1.jpgMySpace has just announced a high-profile move into the digital music retailing space, to compete head-on with Apple’s iTunes. It’s called MySpace Music, and is a joint venture with major labels Sony BMG, Universal Music Group and Warner Music Group. They’re describing it as a “fully integrated 360 degree global music solution”. Whatever that is.No, I’ll tell you what it is. It goes beyond MySpace’s existing music features - streaming tracks on bands’ profiles - and is basically a platform for artists and labels to sell music and other content on the MySpace Music site, on band profiles, and through regular MySpace users’ profiles too. It includes DRM-free song downloads (so they’ll work on your phone), but also a mobile storefront run by Jamba, which like MySpace is owned by News Corporation.

The New York Times reports on a deal between MySpace and three of the four major music labels to develop a new music website. Users will be able to stream songs for free, purchase downloadable tracks, and (possibly) pay a flat monthly fee for unlimited access. From the Times: "Exact terms of the deal and details about the new site, like prices for downloaded music tracks, were not disclosed. But MySpace did say the site would offer songs free of digital rights management software or D.R.M., which is used to prevent illicit copying but can create technical hurdles for buyers. The songs would be playable on any portable music device, including Apple's iPod. For the music industry, the deal is partly born of desperation. In the face of widespread, escalating online piracy, music sales dropped to $11.

When Apple introduced the iTunes Music Store in 2003, the service departed from pirate music download sites in three major ways: the music was protected, the music wasn't free, and the music was offered legally. Apple began to iron out the first of those differences with the advent of digital rights management-free tracks last year, and Reuters reports that the company may about to go after the second major difference in the future.

Wal-Mart (NYSE: WMT), whose online music efforts haven’t exactly caught fire among consumers, is now trying a hardline stance on MP3 downloads, ditching Windows DRM-laden downloads that it used to sell before. What that means is that songs from Universal Music Group and EMI artists are the only ones available on the online music store, as SonyBMG and Warner Music Group (NYSE: WMG) have held their ground on DRM till now. This was first reported by DMN here.
