Trojan adware hiding in MP3s, McAfee says

Security vendor McAfee reported Tuesday that it's seen a huge spike in fake MP3 files spreading on peer-to-peer networks. Although the files have names that make them look like audio recordings, they're really Trojan horse programs that try to install a shoddy media player and adware on your computer. continue

Fake MP3 Files New Hiding Place for Trojan Adware

McAfee is reporting a large uptick in the number of Trojan adware installs via bogus MP3 files on file sharing networks. Masquerading as audio files with real-sounding names, the Trojans install adware on users' PCs. Once someone tries to open the files, they are asked to sign an end-user agreement and then the program installs two Trojan files - NetNucleus and Mirar. Once installed, the infected machines start serving up popup ads. Over the last 24 hours, McAfee reports that nearly one third of all McAfee clients reporting results back to the company have detected these files.

McAfee says .HK domain is most dangerous of all

McAfee says .HK domain is most dangerous of all It isn't fair to judge a book by its cover, but is it fair to judge a domain name by its TLD? Apparently it is, and a new report published by McAfee confirms that certain TLDs are more dangerous to visit, on average, than others. In particular, they flagged 3 TLDs as exceptionally dangerous, with two to three times the percentage of dangerous sites as others. McAfee lists the .hk, .cn and .info TLDs as the most dangerous, with .hk being the most dangerous of all. Of all the sites queried in .hk, more than 19% were flagged as dangerous or “potentially dangerous” (whatever that means), compared to 11.8% of .cn domains and 11.7% of .info domains. This is all compared to .com, which ranked at only 5% - but, as it is the most popular TLD, the numbers may be diluted.

McFeters: McAfee isn't 'McAfee Secure' or 'Hacker Safe'

In my most recent discussion on McAfee, I posted a talkback to Russ McRee stating, tongue in cheek mind you, that it’d be interesting to see an XSS or SQL Injection on McAfee’s site, see if they are indeed “McAfee Secure”. Well, I guess you get what you ask for…

Nanotechnology? What are you talking about?

Trying to define nanotechnology is like the famous tale of the blind men and the elephant: Six blind men were asked to determine what an elephant looked like by feeling different parts of the elephant's body. The blind man who feels a leg says the elephant is like a pillar; the one who feels the tail says the elephant is like a rope; the one who feels the trunk says the elephant is like a tree branch; the one who feels the ear says the elephant is like a hand fan; the one who feels the belly says the elephant is like a wall; and the one who feels the tusk says the elephant is like a solid pipe. It's the same with nanotechnology – it is different things to different people.
