Ars celebrates iTunes Store's birthday with our own wishlist

Happy 5th Birthday, iTunes Store! Photo CC Daniel Catt. Just five years ago today, Apple unveiled the iTunes Music Store, intended to be the best solution for online music distribution. Since then, the name has changed to simply iTunes Store as it offers an array of audio books, movies, and other media in addition to music. In the last five years, the iTunes Store has gone from 20,000 tracks to over 10 million, and now has over 50 million users in 22 countries worldwide. Consistently claiming a large majority of download sales and recently becoming the top music distributor in the US, the iTunes Store is one of the best online sources for legal music and other media.

Apple on Monday celebrated the fifth anniversary of iTunes (Music Store) with a look at back at all "all of the great music, video, and exclusives" that users discovered on iTunes and highlighting the songs and shows that defined each year. On its iTunes store, Apple offered a brief history along with a collection of "best sellers". The company, which launched the iTunes Store on April 28, 2003, claims grew its music catalog of more than 200,000 songs and a handful of exclusive tracks to more than 10 million, according to info available at the online store -- up 66 percent from the 6 million song catalog announced in early April. Update: As readers point out, the iTunes software was released in 2001. [updated]

Partnership to create iTunes storefronts for radio stations

As part of its recent efforts to expand the reach of the iTunes Store, Apple has been getting quite cozy with radio, and coming up with as many iTunes tie-ins as it can. First, we saw iTunes tagging and purchasing for HD radio tracks, but Apple is casting a wider net for its next tie-in and integrating iTunes with radio stations as a whole. Just what is this new venture? Well, Macworld has some coverage on a recent partnership between Apple and a company called Emmis Interactive, which will provide radio stations with web-based iTunes storefronts.

TidBITS Podcast Now in iTunes Store

At long last we've worked through all the picky little details so the audio versions of our articles are now listed in the podcast directory of the iTunes Store. Nothing much changes otherwise - we've been producing audio versions of our articles for quite a few months, but subscribing to them in iTunes is now merely a matter of following this link and clicking the Subscribe button in iTunes. Clicking the Podcast link on our site's navigation bar will also take you to iTunes, and you can of course also search for TidBITS in the iTunes Store; we hope being listed will bring more people to our podcast.

Facebook announces tighter privacy controls

Facebook is rolling out tighter privacy controls that allow users to decide which friends can see their profile information and other personal details, the popular social-networking site announced during a news briefing at its Palo Alto headquarters Tuesday. Facebook's more than 67 million users will be able to better distinguish between friends, family and co-workers and share information accordingly, the company said. The changes will take effect Thursday. Facebook also showed off an instant-messaging, or chat, feature that it plans to launch in coming weeks. Unlike with other features on the site, users will be able to communicate with each other in real time. Privacy has been a touchy subject for Facebook. Although it offers more controls than most social networks, it twice has come under fire from users who didn't like the way their

Facebook hires Google's Schrage to head communications

Facebook, the second most popular social-networking Web site, hired Google's Elliot Schrage to head communications and public policy, at least the third senior Google executive to join the start-up in two months. Schrage, 47, will start May 14, Palo Alto-based Facebook said Tuesday in a statement. He joined Google in October 2005, where he was vice president of global communications and public affairs. Facebook Chief Executive Mark Zuckerberg is bolstering management ranks as his closely held company seeks a larger share of the $41 billion Internet advertising market. In March, Facebook hired Google veteran Sheryl Sandberg as operating chief, as well as Ethan Beard, Google's former director of social media.

iTunes UK adds NBC/Universal, despite US boycott

The UK iTunes Store has added a variety of TV shows from NBC/Universal (iTunes link) in spite of their absence from iTunes in the US. Selection is currently limited, but incorporates seasons of Heroes, House, Eureka, Hercules: The Legendary Journeys and The Incredible Hulk. Unlike the standard iTunes pricing model, notably, which is consistent across all shows, active shows at the UK store (such as Heroes) are being priced at Ł1.89 per episode, while defunct ones have a separate rate of only Ł1.19.

Facebook Pulls Out of Google Friend Connect

Google’s new Friend Connect initiative is in trouble. On May 15, Facebook effectively pulled out of participation in Google Friend Connect service, which links social networks and traditional Web sites. “Now that Google has launched Friend Connect, we’ve had a chance to evaluate the technology. We’ve found that it redistributes user information from Facebook to other developers without users’ knowledge, which doesn’t respect the privacy standards our users have come to expect and is a violation of our Terms of Service. Just as we’ve been forced to do for other applications that redistribute data in a way users might not expect or understand, we’ve had to suspend Friend Connect’s access to Facebook user information until it comes into compliance,” according to Facebook.

Billboard looks at the profitability of iTunes

When the iTunes Store first appeared, many believed that it was merely being offered to entice people to buy iPods—not to make Apple boatloads of money. But the iTunes Store has grown quite a bit since it was launched, and has become the second-largest music retailer in the world. According to Apple, the Store has now sold over 4 billion songs. After hearing that figure, Billboard decided to take another look at the old iTunes profitability assumption, and found that the iTunes Store is in fact quite profitable for Apple.

Blockbuster beware: iTunes Store gets same-day DVD releases

In January, Apple flipped the switch on movie rentals for the iTunes Store to much fanfare. A lot of customers don't want to own movies, digital downloads are just plain convenient, and the move seemed to finally crack the major studio nut and catch their attention. Since the announcement, the iTunes Store has been slowly but steadily marching towards a respectable selection of films from all the major studios, as well as independents. Despite this new beat in Apple's step, a number of quirks in the iTunes Store's movie offering have annoyed customers. First and foremost was the release delay: films had a 30-day lead time on DVD before arriving in the iTunes Store, and the majority of new releases were only available for rent, not to purchase.

New York Library offering content on iTunes U

This week the New York Public Library began offering content through iTunes U. iTunes U is a dedicated area of the iTunes Store featuring educational content. Universities like Yale, Duke and Stanford are already using the platform to share their lectures, course content and other information in the same format with which iTunes users are already familiar.

Insiders point to video on French iTunes Store soon

When Apple began adding video content to the German iTunes Store in early April, the country became just the third non-US iTunes Store to get TV shows. But there are more than just three countries where the iTunes music is available (21 by my count), so of course, there is continuing speculation over which country might be the next to get video. That speculation has now centered upon France, as French site ElectronLibre recently reported that video content may appear on the French iTunes Store sometime soon.
