In a bid to regain lost ground in the fiercely competitive gaming business, Sony announced Tuesday that it will cut the price of its high-end PlayStation 3 console by $100. It also will introduce downloads of movies and TV shows to the game machine's online store and, with some software partners, roll out a number of exclusive games.

Seattle-based Amazon.com said Wednesday afternoon that the firm has linked its Amazon Video On Demand service to Sony's BRAVIA television sets. According to Amazon, customers can now watch video titles from the site on Sony's BRAVIA Internet Video Link device. The device is used to stream Internet video content to Sony HDTVs. Financial details of the deal were not disclosed. Amazon has a similar deal with TiVo. Amazon's video on demand service is also accessible via PC using the Amazon Unbox software application. Amazon said that moves and TV shows can be both rented or purchased via the device, which is currently in beta.

Sony has no plans to slash the PlayStation 3's price in the near future, company CFO Nobuyuki Oneda said on Friday. The Japanese executive insists that Sony's goal remains to make the Blu-ray game system profitable by reducing the price of its individual parts. Selling extra games should also help the PS3's bottom line, Oneda says. He declines to estimate when a price cut could take place.

Strong evidence of a price drop for the Xbox 360 has many expecting a formal announcement from Microsoft this weekend, just prior to its E3 press conference on Monday. Sony has launched the Playstation 3 video store, bringing yet another broadband video delivery avenue to market. The store offers roughly 300 movies in both standard and high-definition formats for rental, ranging from $2.99 to $5.99. TV shows can be purchased for $1.99 and up, while films can be purchased for between $9.99 and $14.99. Those hoping for a PS3 price cut in the near future better not hold their breaths. A Sony spokesperson confirmed on Friday that the company had no plans right now to give you another deal on the machine, and anyone hoping for that kind of news at Leipzig will be sorely disappointed. Given that they slashed the price less than a year ago, this shouldn't be too surprising. Though PS3 sales are still trailing behind the Wii, it's relatively recent discount put it neck to neck for second place with the cheaper Xbox 360. [Reuters]

Sony's just announced a video service for their PS3 called VidZone, which somehow offers up free music and videos, albeit only in PAL regions for the time being. It'll allow you to streaming unlimited music on demand for free, but it's unclear whether it'll be ad-supported, or whether the catalog will be full of only Sony BMG tracks, or whether these are horrible tracks that nobody wants to hear anyway. We'll update with more info when we get it, but this is separate from the current PSN service which already lets you buy and rent movies (which is shown in the screenshot above). [Maxconsole]

Sony at its E3 press gathering this afternoon formally introduced a Video section to the console side of the PlayStation Store. Users of the PlayStation 3 will be able to buy or rent content from most major studios, including not just its own Sony Pictures but also Disney, Fox, NGM, Paramount, Warner, and other smaller studios. The company is uniquely one of the first to allow TV show purchases in HD as well as in standard definition, and prices them at $2 each; movies can be rented in either resolution for typical prices of $3 to $4, with permanent movie downloads selling for $10 to $20.

The W3C has decided to take a look at Web video with the aim of making it a first class citizen. This is good news, as up until now, video (and it's companion, audio) have been difficult to place on Web pages, and have caused problems like slow downloads and difficult compatibility. I put up a video the other day, and it streamed great on my computer, but on my brother's Linux box, he had to download the whole thing before it would even play. And he couldn't even download the first version of the video that I made. So, if you've had trouble adding video to your Web pages, you're not the only one. Maybe someday we won't be forced to use the deprecated embed tag, and when we do use the object tag our videos will play.

Unveiling the new Home, Sony revealed that video rentals and purchases are finally coming to the PS3. Video will be fully integrated into the PlayStation Store, which will have a new video section. And you can transfer them to your PSP via USB, and have them on multiple devices at once! Standard and high def, with rentals running $3-$6 and $10-$15 for purchases. It takes about an hour to download a two-hour movie. Most of the major studios are on board (Kotaku has a partial list in their liveblog), and it goes live tonight!

As we saw in the Sony IFA 2008 Liveblog, these new Sony Cybershot digital 10.1 megapixel cameras also shoot HD video (720p, though that's not mentioned in the press release.) The T500 has a Carl Zeiss Vario-Tessar lens with 5x optical zoom, 3.5-inch touchscreen, eight-person face tracking, and something called "Double Anti-blur" technology which combines high sensitivity (for fast shutter times) with optical image-shake reduction. It can also connect directly to your HDTV and do slideshows, music and video shows without needing a PC. It's due October, price info still to be announced. Press release below.

Bad news spreads fast in today's world, so when Sony released the 2.40 PS3 firmware update last week it wasn't long before reports of problems started to emerge, with some being unlucky enough to brick their console with the update. Sony therefore made the decision to take down the 2.40 update while they ironed out the problems, with the result being today's 2.41 firmware. Sony are now confident that the issues with 2.40 have been resolved, and have extended their apologies to the Playstation community for any inconvenience caused. 2.41 doesn't add any additional features over 2.40, and Sony hasn't said what it will do about the consoles that were bricked by the 2.40 firmware yet.
