Sony BMG Offers DRM-Free MP3s Via Dada

Dada Entertainment and Sony BMG have signed a deal to make full-length DRM-free MP3s available to Dada’s subscribers. The service charges $9.99 a month for 15 tokens, each of which can be redeemed for a ringtone, game or other mobile content—the new deal will let people download full songs to their computer and transfer them to a mobile phone or digital music player. Dada wants other labels to join, and expects to offer over-the-air downloads in the coming months (to AT&T (NYSE: T), Sprint (NYSE: S), T-Mobile, Alltel (NYSE: AT), Virgin, Cellular One, Boost, Cricket, and Nextel). Dada is also repurposing its social network to focus on music, and changing its name to The Music Movement.

Another nail in the DRM coffin: Rhapsody launches DRM-free MP3 store

This week, online music retailer Rhapsody has launched a new DRM-free music store in the US, allowing users to download unprotected 256kbps MP3 files for $0.99 per track (or $9.99 per album). While Rhapsody is just the latest in a string of online music stores to offer DRM-free music (including Amazon's MP3 store and Apple's iTunes Plus), it bangs another nail in the coffin of DRM in the online music business. We think the move away from DRM will benefit consumers, device vendors and online music retailers, by removing one of the biggest barriers to consumer acceptance of digital music sales.

AT&T (Re-)Offers Free iPhone Wi-Fi - Sloppy launch much?

In May, AT&T briefly gave all iPhone users free Wi-Fi for a short period. The free Wi-Fi party ended quickly after the company realized that by simply switching the browser user agent to mobile Safari, anyone could get free access. Shortly thereafter, references to the free Wi-Fi again popped up briefly on the AT&T website, only to disappear with the company offering no comment. Now a user submits this link to our news queue showing that references to free AT&T Wi-Fi for smartphones has once again popped up on the AT&T website. Says big blue:

VIA Releases 16K-Line FOSS Framebuffer Driver

billybob2 writes "VIA has released 16,434 Lines Of Free & Open Source code that enables Linux natively to use the framebuffer on VIA's graphics chipsets. This comes a month after VIA announced that it will provide Open-Source drivers and documentation on its Web site so that its hardware will work out of the box with Linux distributions. This gives VIA-powered systems that come pre-installed with Linux — such as the gPC, 15.4" gBook, CloudBook, and Zonbu — the ability to output graphics through digital connections such as HDMI, and probably makes them the best-supported framebuffers Linux has ever had. Look forward to documentation and X.org drivers from VIA as well in the near future."

RIAA: DRM not dead and will likely be invigorated by subscriptions

RIAA: DRM not dead and will likely be invigorated by subscriptions When Sony BMG became the last major label to sell DRM-free tracks, we all hoped the consumer-hostile technology would soon be dead and forgotten – at least for the music industry. According to RIAA’s David Hughes, however, news of DRM’s death has been greatly exaggerated and in fact it is poised to make a comeback to make up for where it has fallen.

A look at DRM one year after iTunes Plus

A year ago, if you wanted to purchase and download music without digital rights management—aka DRM, the protection scheme that controls what you can do with your digital media—your choices were few and far between. Some small outfits, such as eMusic, sold DRM-free music, though not usually from the major labels. And while other services, such as Yahoo Music, had toyed with DRM-free releases, it was only for limited promotions. But the vast majority of digital music available online, from vendors like Apple, Microsoft, and Napster, used some form of DRM to protect its content.

VIA Introduces the Nano Processor

Vigile writes "While the VIA Isaiah architecture had been previously discussed, the new x86 processor is officially being released as the VIA Nano. The Nano marks VIA's first 64-bit, superscalar, speculative out-of-order CPU design and is being built on Fujitsu's 65nm process technology. While direct performance comparisons are still missing, the products being released could bring Intel's Atom platform to its knees: clock speeds as high as 1.8 GHz or as low as 1.0 GHz with a maximum power draw of only 5 watts! VIA's recently announced mini-note OpenBook platform is a likely candidate for the Nano the processors but they will likely find their way into mainstream desktop and notebook computers as well." Reader MojoKid contributes a link to HotHardware's story on the chip now known as the Nano , as well as a January interview with VIA's Ce
