Sandisk's slotMusic cards are not much more than tweaked 1GB microSD cards with a logo and a special USB-compatible sled: but the fact that they'll carry albums from big names like BMI Music, Sony BMG, Universal Music Group, and Warner Music Group makes them interesting. They'll also be DRM free too, which is a pleasant surprise. It's an attempt to change the way some people buy MP3s—you'll get a card you can slot into your cellphone or PC with high-quality MP3s (up to 320kbps), artwork, videos and such, which you can also reuse as a 1GB memory card later, and that's kinda handy.

Pacemakers and implantable defibrillators' normal operation can be changed when in close proximity to headphones used with MP3 player equipment. Previously it has been found that MP3 players themselves don't interfere with cardiac equipment.

SanDisk's new portable device, the Sansa slotMusic Player, uses a new physical format that it hopes will prove to be a hit with music fans. Instead of using one of the many online digital music services to download music, consumers will be able to purchase slotMusic cards that have albums preloaded on them. This will obviously appeal to people who prefer to purchase music on physical media like the compact disc, but will it have mass appeal?

BLOGOSPHERE (Hypebot) – Emails from mp3 bloggers received in recent days as well as posts on mp3 blogs point towards renewed attacks from the RIAA and its UK equivalent the IFPI. MP3 blogs operate in a legal gray area, but have become a major source of exposure particularly for indie music. Most mp3 bloggers take down any track on request, but recently rights holders are going straight to ISPs or service providers demanding action. Last week the Berkeley Place blog wrote:

Walmart today made an aggressive move against Amazon and Apple by lowering the prices of its MP3 Music Downloads store. The service now offers per-track downloads as low as 74 cents versus the 89-cent minimum of Amazon MP3 and iTunes' fixed 99-cent price. Normal tracks are 94 cents, Wal-Mart says. The retailer also plans to drive users to the store through a tie-in with CD sales: starting from mid-November, those who order physical copies of albums either online or in stores get a free MP3 song from any artist or album.

It's funny how things work out sometimes - I took the screen sht above to illustrate how much I like the a-la-carte approach to music. Sarah McLachlan, one of my favourite female singer/songwriters, just released a double-disc best of album. I fired up the Zune software and compared all the songs I already owned, then purchased all the ones I didn't. Seemed perfect to me - until I realized that after purchasing seven total songs, only one had downloaded. I was using Firefox 3.0.3 to make the purchases, and each time I clicked on BUY MP3 I was given a download prompt for a file that would trigger the Amazon MP3 downloader - which is a bit odd, since usually single tracks are downloaded direclty as MP3 files. I checked the Task Manager, and the Amazon MP3 downloader process was running, but it was pegged at 25% CPU use - meaning it was lock

An anonymous reader writes "Do you contribute to open source projects under your real name or a nickname? The openness of open source can be encouraging, but software patents you have never heard of can become a nightmare if a patent troll sues for implementing 'their' scroll bar. A real name also means you end up in the big index we call search engines. An assumed name could be an additional layer of protection, but what are its pros and cons and is it worth the hassle when asked to participate in a meatspace meeting?"

For most small businesses, the obvious choice for a domain name for your website is your business name with a .com attached to the end of it. But one simple search on any of the domain name registrar websites will tell you that is not as easy of a task as it sounds. For a variety of reasons (some of which we’ll discuss in this post), many small business owners are finding that the name of their business is no longer available as a .com.

Sansa Clip The innovators at SanDisk are at it again with the recent roll out of the Sansa Clip MP3 player. 4,000 songs on a clip sounds like endless entertainment to me. Combine this capacity with 15 hours of rechargeable battery life, and you will be glad you bought this player ($99 MSRP). One of my favorite features on this tiny MP3 player is the built-in FM tuner. Another great feature is the OLED color screen. This little-bitsy MP3 player seems too small to have a screen, and yet, there it is in full color.
