Are MP3 Blogs Under Attack?

BLOGOSPHERE (Hypebot) Emails from mp3 bloggers received in recent days as well as posts on mp3 blogs point towards renewed attacks from the RIAA and its UK equivalent the IFPI. MP3 blogs operate in a legal gray area, but have become a major source of exposure particularly for indie music. Most mp3 bloggers take down any track on request, but recently rights holders are going straight to ISPs or service providers demanding action. Last week the Berkeley Place blog wrote:

Dell mini-MP3 player won't show this year

The company has reportedly been testing a prototype of a mini-MP3 player that is based on the company's Zing software. The MP3 player had been expected to show up sometime during the fall of 2008.

Digital MP3 Downloads = Awesomeness...When They Work

It's funny how things work out sometimes - I took the screen sht above to illustrate how much I like the a-la-carte approach to music. Sarah McLachlan, one of my favourite female singer/songwriters, just released a double-disc best of album. I fired up the Zune software and compared all the songs I already owned, then purchased all the ones I didn't. Seemed perfect to me - until I realized that after purchasing seven total songs, only one had downloaded. I was using Firefox 3.0.3 to make the purchases, and each time I clicked on BUY MP3 I was given a download prompt for a file that would trigger the Amazon MP3 downloader - which is a bit odd, since usually single tracks are downloaded direclty as MP3 files. I checked the Task Manager, and the Amazon MP3 downloader process was running, but it was pegged at 25% CPU use - meaning it was lock

Content Axis Launches New Review Blog eStepz - One of the top ranking copywriting agency, Content Axis, now launches a new review blog, eStepz apparently with a different approach in contrast to the traditional blog reviews sites people ave been coming across on the web. Over the years, review blogs have been a fairly effective tool for promotions, advertising, link building and search engine optimization. eStepz takes the sole aim of promoting the website and enhancing traffic while disseminating relevant information for the viewers. Review blogs are not only popular but are also believed to be extremely effective when people look for the best services, products and features available. While blogs could be very useful for promoting business online by enhancing traffic and generating revenue, many fall short in quality levels.

C. Crane Witness brings AM radio to an MP3 player

Fans of AM radio have largely been left out in the cold by MP3 player manufacturers. The excuses are many, but the main reason most device makers avoid the feature is due to the relatively large space required of an AM antenna, thus inhibiting the overall compactness of the final product. PoGo Products briefly came to the rescue with a line of AM-friendly MP3 players, but the company ceased production of the line after only a few years. Filling the void is the C. Crane Witness AM/FM MP3 Player, a basic radio-cum-MP3 player reminiscent of the Radio YourWay LX. Even with its throwback design and monochrome display, the Witness will cost you a pretty penny--$229.95 for 2GB--but AM radio fans have little other choice, and will likely be plenty pleased with the features on offer.

New "MP3 100% Compatible" Logo For DRM-Free Music

Sockatume writes "A coalition of seven UK digital music stores have created a logo for DRM-free, MP3 music. The 'MP3: 100% Compatible' logo allows the stores to emphasize the advantages of the format, namely that MP3 files will run on any device and won't keel over and die as DRM-laden files are wont to. The BPI — the UK equivalent of the RIAA — is backing the scheme, emphasizing that it will also allow users to identify legitimate stores."

Walmart MP3 hits 74 cents, gains Mac support

Walmart today made an aggressive move against Amazon and Apple by lowering the prices of its MP3 Music Downloads store. The service now offers per-track downloads as low as 74 cents versus the 89-cent minimum of Amazon MP3 and iTunes' fixed 99-cent price. Normal tracks are 94 cents, Wal-Mart says. The retailer also plans to drive users to the store through a tie-in with CD sales: starting from mid-November, those who order physical copies of albums either online or in stores get a free MP3 song from any artist or album.

Twinned MP3 Player for the Couple that Shares Everything

Are you in a relationship? Can you hardly bear to be apart from your partner for more than half an hour? Do you make out in the library while sitting next to a Gizmodo writer, totally unaware that someday he'll grumpily complain about you in a post? Well, I have the perfect mp3 player for you and your equally annoying significant other. The Twinned MP3 Player concept is actually two mp3 players, capable of holding only one playlist each: the same one. When combined, in that adorable spooning position, you can plug 'em into the computer to load your songs, but when separated, they can only play back the tunes you and your partner have chosen together. Just the one playlist. Forever. At least it's easier to throw away than a matching tattoo.

IDC Expects The Asia/Pacific MP3 Player Market to Shrink in 2012 Due to Convergence and Competition from Other Devices

Singapore and Hong Kong, September 18, 2008 – While portable MP3 players are still one of the most popular consumer electronics devices around the Asia/Pacific excluding Japan (APEJ) region, MP3 player shipment growth is expected to slow to just 4.4% in 2009 before finally turning slightly negative in 2012. According to IDC's report “Asia/Pacific (excluding Japan) Portable Audio (MP3) Player 2007-2012 Forecast and Analysis (Doc#AP654103Q)”, pressure from competing devices as well as market saturation in countries like Australia and Singapore will contribute to this.
