Zappa's widow, AC/DC rail against the iTunes Store

The iTunes Store has built quite a substantial catalog of music since its inception, and most artists are (at the very least) tolerant of having their music appear on the service. Some are still not fans of the iTunes Store, though, and have either spoken out against it or refused to sell their music on it. Recently, MacUser pointed us to two such cases: Frank Zappa's widow Gail, who doesn't like the compression that iTunes Store tracks are subjected to, and AC/DC, who dislikes iTunes because it lets users buy individual tracks instead of full albums.

How-To: Enable and control missing features in iTunes 8

The iTunes 8 update came with a host of new features, including the Genius playlist generator as well as the "Grid" view for displaying album covers. However, despite the new features, users have complained about the removal or lack of inclusion of other features. Most of the removed features are coded into the program, but they are not enabled. This could be because of a change in direction by Apple, an attempt to make iTunes simpler, or because some features are still not polished enough for general release. Regardless of the circumstances, popular features that are missing from iTunes can be enabled for those who wish to do so. Here are some enhancements or alterations to iTunes that have been requested. All users have to do is enter the following commands in the terminal and then relaunch iTunes.

Norway's top consumer advocate is taking Apple to court to try to force the company to open iTunes to all music players. This ought to be interesting, I am not familiar with the laws in Norway but if they are successful, you can bet other countries will follow suit.

Apple ignores Norway's deadline for iTunes DRM talks...

Norway's Consumer Ombudsman has said that he will take Apple before the country's Market Council, as the computer manufacturer failed to provide a sufficient response to request that iTunes be made compatible with other media players than the iPod, according to CNNMoney. The Ombudsman, Bjoern Erik Thon, made a demand for action at the end of September but gave the company until November 3rd to submit comments before a case is heard. "iTunes has shown a lacking will to comply with our demand and we are now preparing to try this case in the Market Council," said Thon.

Overview: iPhone - The Portable Genius

The highly-touted Genius function comes not only to the iTunes 8.0, but to iPhone 2.1 software. To install it, however, you must have Genius downloaded it onto iTunes using your iTunes account. The iPhone must then be synced to that iTunes. Again, iPhone Genius does not automatically download with iPhone 2.1 software, but with syncing of a Genius-enabled iTunes. (And we discussed Genius on regular iTunes in the second-to-last column.)

Might iTunes Shut Down?

The biggest threat to iTunes may not come from the AC/DC after all, but from within Apple itself. On Thursday, the Copyright Royalty Board is expected to rule on a request from the National Music Publishers' Association, the group that represents musicians and songwriters, to increase royalty rates by 66% percent from 9 cents a track to 15 cents. Yesterday, Fortune reported that in a written statement to the Copyright Royalty Board last year, iTunes vice president Eddie Cue threatened to pull the plug on the iTunes Store if royalty rates to music publishers were increased. "Apple has repeatedly made it clear that it is in this business to make money," Cue said in his statement. "And most likely would not continue to operate [the iTunes music store] if it were no longer possible to do so profitably.

Syncing iTunes U videos

I’ve downloaded a series of iPhone developer videos from the iTunes U section of the iTunes Store. iTunes has considerately created a playlist for each series within a folder. But I’m not sure how to sync the movies because when I mount my iPhone and choose it within iTunes, I don’t see these playlists listed within the Music or Video tabs. How can I sync these things?

Useful iTunes Keyboard Shortcuts

So here's what an iTunes fan simply has to know about the shortcuts of his favorite media player.

Software Update Makes iTunes Accessible To Blind Users

rickthewizkid writes "Recent updates to the iTunes software allow blind users to access the program without assistance. From the article: 'The new software — which transforms the written information on an iTunes-linked computer screen into speech or Braille — stemmed from an agreement between Apple, the Cupertino, Calif.-based computer company, the National Federation of the Blind and Massachusetts Attorney General Martha Coakley.'" It's not just the actual iTunes app, though; the article notes that this update makes iTunes U useable as well.
