The GNU diff and patch utilities let you compare files to generate a patch that describes the changes between files. You can then apply the patch file on that machine or another. You might think to use diff and patch on XML files, since they are just text files -- and depending on your application, diff and patch might serve your needs well. However, as things such as the sequence in which attributes are ordered in an element tag are not important in an XML file, using specific tools that are aware of the XML standard can make seeing differences and sending XML-aware "patch" files much more attractive.

Los Angeles-based Napster said late last night that it has launched a new, DRM-free MP3 store, specifically aimed at luring in Apple iPod and iPhone users. The provider of digital music downloads said that the new store will offer single MP3 tracks for sale at 99 cents, and $9.95 for most albums. Napster said it will offer 100 percent of its catalog in MP3 format. Until now, Napster's music download services did not support Apple's popular iPod music player. Napster's new MP3 store also offers high resolution artwork along with the MP3 tracks and albums.

Amazon is in talks to bring its Amazon MP3 music store outside of the US as early as the summer, the British Telegraph newspaper claims. Senior officials from Amazon's online store have purportedly visited British label heads to negotiate details of the launch and hope to introduce a UK version of Amazon MP3 before the final quarter of the year, which starts in October. Details of the launch aren't mentioned but should still include an insistence on the store's namesake unprotected MP3 tracks.

Smivs writes "Britain's Ministry of Defence has just released files regarding investigations into UFO sightings between 1978 to 1987. Over the next three or four years, 160 files will be handed over to the National Archives. The first group of eight files, one of which is more than 450 pages long, is available today. The Guardian newspaper details many of the events in question, some interesting and many just bizarre. A similar release of UFO files by France's national space agency last year attracted more than 220,000 users on its first day, causing it to crash. To avoid such problems, the National Archives is using an external hosting company which can add extra capacity as needed to handle the web traffic."

Napster launched its MP3 service this morning with 6 million unprotected MP3s and a library that the company claims is 50 percent larger than any other MP3 store in existence. The store is a direct attempt to challenge the dominance of iTunes and to take on Amazon MP3, which has been moving up in the ranks in terms of popularity. However, given Napster's slight foibles with its MP3 store, it may find unseating iTunes and Amazon a little more difficult than expected.

"Recently I read a review of an mp3 player where the author purposely chose not to discuss sound quality because, in the author’s words, 'The chosen player has a great deal to do with how you access your music, but very little to do with how it sounds…' That got me thinking. Do all mp3 players sound alike? They are all digital, so it’s the same 1’s and 0’s playing the music, so how can there be a difference in sound quality? I have tested some mp3 players myself and have noticed drastic differences. I have trouble believing that mp3 players don’t influence sound quality that much. They have different components, circuitry, software and build tolerances, so how can there not be a difference?"

Los Angeles - Napster (NASD: NAPS) on Tuesday announced the launch of its new, DRM-free MP3 store, which it claims is 50% larger than any similar store, at 6 million tracks, with the largest major label MP3 catalog and the largest library of independent music. "Music fans have spoken and it's clear they need the convenience, ease of use and broad interoperability of the DRM-free MP3 format, and they want to be able to find both major label artists and independent music all in one place. Napster is delighted to deliver all of this and more with the world's largest MP3 catalog," said Napster chairman and CEO Chris Gorog.

Users are experiencing an issue under Mac OS X 10.5.3 in which, when saving files to a remote server, files become corrupt and can no longer be opened by the CS3 program in which they were created. This appears to only happen when files are saved remotely -- when files are saved to a local volume this problem does not appear to occur. Additionally, even if the affected files are copied from the server to a local volume on the computer, they still do not work. As described by Apple Discussion user "chadclark":

Here’s a quick summary of Fortune’s look at the world of MP3 blogs: Sites like Peter Rojas’ RCRD LBL and TheFader.com attract hip readers that advertisers salivate over. But on their own, they’re too small to easily attract big advertisers. The familiar solution: an MP3 blog network. Music marketers Jon Cohen and Rob Stone of Cornerstone Promotions (which owns TheFader) have already sold Fortune 500 advertisers like Microsoft (NSDQ: MSFT) and Toyota on the network, which claims 240,000 readers. That’s basically the news, and the rest reads kind of like an ad for Cohen and Stone to pitch advertisers on the notion that their network of MP3 blogs is a great place to reach the right audience.

By far the most difficult (read: impossible) question for me to answer is: what is the very best MP3 player/headphone/iPod speaker/etc? That's because there is no single device in any given category that is perfect for every person. There is a healthy handful of MP3 players that I think are excellent, but finding the right device for an individual has a lot to do with personal preference and requirements. I can, however, tell you what I would buy for myself. Also this week: how to judge the best time to buy a new MP3 player.
