iTunes Movie Buyers Lose Wait: related news

iTunes Movie Buyers Lose Wait

Those who buy downloaded movies through Apple's iTunes service usually have had to wait until 30 days after the movie had been released on physical DVDs. However, Apple has announced deals with many of its partnering studios that will allow iTunes to offer movie sales on the same day the DVD is out. Those who prefer to rent, however, will still have to observe the waiting period.

UK, Canada get iTunes movie purchases and rentals

UK, Canada get iTunes movie purchases and rentals Earlier this year Apple announced its much-anticipated movie rental service for US customers of the iTunes Store – complementing its direct movie sales business. But though success in this department has been a far cry from that of its digital music store, the video download market is still expanding… and so is the iTunes Store. Starting today, Apple iTunes movies rentals and purchases are also available for customers in both Canada and the UK.

iTunes finally reaches 1,000 movie mark, a few months late

When the iTunes movie rental service first made its debut, it didn't take very long for someone to point out that the Emperor didn't have any clothes (or in this case, that Steve didn't have many movie rentals). Only 400 or so movies were available when the target date for 1,000 rentals, something that we thought might be due to the slowness of licensing agreements from the movie studios. Apple and the studios seem to have gotten their acts together, though. Macworld found in its most recent checks that the iTunes Store now boasts over 1,000 movie rentals.

Sync your iTunes libraries

iTunes can easily share its content over your local network. But if you want a complete copy of your media library on more than one Mac, you’ll need to synchronize some files. However, merely copying, say, a folder full of AAC files from one Mac to another is not enough; you must also copy the iTunes Library files containing metadata, playlists, and other important information. And therein lies the rub: If you’ve changed the contents of iTunes on both Macs, merely copying the iTunes Library files in one direction or the other (manually or with a file-synchronization utility) won’t synchronize their contents, so neither iTunes library will be correct. For example, songs present on both Macs’ hard disks may not actually show up in iTunes on one Mac or the other, and one Mac’s playlists might entirely overwrite the other’s.

iTunes K-12 launches with resources for students, parents

Since its launch a little over a year ago, iTunes U has grown into a large collection of educational material and resources from over 70 colleges and universities worldwide. Yesterday, at the National Education Computing Conference in San Antonio, Texas, iTunes K-12 was announced as a service on the iTunes Store, similar to that of iTunes U, but aimed at primary and secondary education. "K-12 on iTunes U" is a modest start in comparison to what iTunes U has become, but with 11 entities already, it's a start.

Blockbuster beware: iTunes Store gets same-day DVD releases

In January, Apple flipped the switch on movie rentals for the iTunes Store to much fanfare. A lot of customers don't want to own movies, digital downloads are just plain convenient, and the move seemed to finally crack the major studio nut and catch their attention. Since the announcement, the iTunes Store has been slowly but steadily marching towards a respectable selection of films from all the major studios, as well as independents. Despite this new beat in Apple's step, a number of quirks in the iTunes Store's movie offering have annoyed customers. First and foremost was the release delay: films had a 30-day lead time on DVD before arriving in the iTunes Store, and the majority of new releases were only available for rent, not to purchase.

iTunes Opens Gates to Canadian, UK Movie Buffs

Users in Canada and the UK have gained access to movie purchase and rental options from iTunes. The stores opened with 1,200 and 700 titles, respectively, a fraction of which are available for rent in high definition. The U.S. has had access to the offering for several months. Rolling out the iTunes movie store to new countries takes time because of the complex negotiations and dealing that must be done with the content rights holders.

About iTunes library files

In any good tutorial related to moving iTunes playlists and libraries from Point A to Point Z you’ll see some mention of iTunes’ library files—specifically, the iTunes Library and iTunes Music Library.xml files. On the Mac these files are stored at this location: youruserfolder/Music/iTunes. Swell, but what purpose do these files serve? It’s like this:

Ars celebrates iTunes Store's birthday with our own wishlist

Happy 5th Birthday, iTunes Store! Photo CC Daniel Catt. Just five years ago today, Apple unveiled the iTunes Music Store, intended to be the best solution for online music distribution. Since then, the name has changed to simply iTunes Store as it offers an array of audio books, movies, and other media in addition to music. In the last five years, the iTunes Store has gone from 20,000 tracks to over 10 million, and now has over 50 million users in 22 countries worldwide. Consistently claiming a large majority of download sales and recently becoming the top music distributor in the US, the iTunes Store is one of the best online sources for legal music and other media.

Apple touts 5th iTunes birthday, 10m song catalog

Apple on Monday celebrated the fifth anniversary of iTunes (Music Store) with a look at back at all "all of the great music, video, and exclusives" that users discovered on iTunes and highlighting the songs and shows that defined each year. On its iTunes store, Apple offered a brief history along with a collection of "best sellers". The company, which launched the iTunes Store on April 28, 2003, claims grew its music catalog of more than 200,000 songs and a handful of exclusive tracks to more than 10 million, according to info available at the online store -- up 66 percent from the 6 million song catalog announced in early April. Update: As readers point out, the iTunes software was released in 2001. [updated]

Partnership to create iTunes storefronts for radio stations

As part of its recent efforts to expand the reach of the iTunes Store, Apple has been getting quite cozy with radio, and coming up with as many iTunes tie-ins as it can. First, we saw iTunes tagging and purchasing for HD radio tracks, but Apple is casting a wider net for its next tie-in and integrating iTunes with radio stations as a whole. Just what is this new venture? Well, Macworld has some coverage on a recent partnership between Apple and a company called Emmis Interactive, which will provide radio stations with web-based iTunes storefronts.

Apple premieres movies for sale and rent on UK iTunes Store with 48 hour rental window

Apple today announced that movies from major film studios including 20th Century Fox, The Walt Disney Studios, Paramount Pictures, Warner Bros. Entertainment, Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer Studios Inc. (MGM), Sony Pictures Television International and Lionsgate UK are now available on the iTunes Store in the UK. Movie purchases and rentals feature iTunes’ legendary ease of use, which makes discovering and enjoying movies as simple and easy as buying music on iTunes has always been. The iTunes Store in the UK features over 700 films available for rent or purchase, with titles available for purchase on the same day as their DVD release, including favorites such as “Hitman,” “I Am Legend,” “National Treasure 2: Book of Secrets” and “Into the Wild.

iTunes to Offer Movie Downloads Same Day as DVD Release Date

Apple announced it will now allow impatient movie buffs a chance to download new Hollywood releases the same day the movies becomes available on DVD. That cuts sometimes weeks of waiting for a movie title to be release first as DVDs and then eventually as a download at services such as iTunes and CinemaNow.

iTunes UK adds NBC/Universal, despite US boycott

The UK iTunes Store has added a variety of TV shows from NBC/Universal (iTunes link) in spite of their absence from iTunes in the US. Selection is currently limited, but incorporates seasons of Heroes, House, Eureka, Hercules: The Legendary Journeys and The Incredible Hulk. Unlike the standard iTunes pricing model, notably, which is consistent across all shows, active shows at the UK store (such as Heroes) are being priced at Ł1.89 per episode, while defunct ones have a separate rate of only Ł1.19.

iTunes To Sell New DVD Releases

Apple's iTunes will offer new movies for download on the same day as their DVD release at a price of $14.99. The iTunes movie downloads can be viewed on an iPod with video, a Mac or PC, or a TV using Apple TV. iTunes isn't alone: several studios are also making movies available through cable video-on-demand (VOD) services on the DVD release day.

iTunes rentals arrive in Canada, U.K. with 48-hour time limit

Apple’s newly announced movie rental service for its iTunes offerings in Canada and the United Kingdom may come several months after the same service debuted in the United States. But the Canadian and British versions of movie rentals do carry one substantial difference—customers in those markets will have 48 hours to finish a movie once they start watching it. That’s twice as long as U.S. customers have.

Movie Sales May Follow Music Online

Apple, Inc.'s iTunes Store reached a significant milestone as its music downloads passed the five billion mark. Apple is also making it easy to access digital movies from major studios on the iTunes Store, and online movie sales could soar. An analyst points out that with Apple's iTunes Store and the Netflix by Roku, digital movies are here to stay.

iTunes movies may actually be Apple TV loss leaders

Apple is allegedly paying more for its same-day-as-DVD iTunes movies than it charges customers for the downloads, indicating that the company views the movies as a loss leader to help sell other products. The ever-popular "person familiar with the matter" told the Wall Street Journal (subscription) that Apple pays the movie studios a wholesale price of $16 per movie while only charging customers $14.99 for new releases. The $1.01 loss on each movie sale is sure to add up, but Apple is apparently confident that such an agreement will pay off in the long run.
