Apple this morning has released iTunes 7.7, the latest version of its media organization and sync software. The new version is designed to sync music, video, and more with iPhone 3G as well as download applications from the iTunes Store exclusively designed for iPhone and iPod touch with software version 2.0 or later; Apple's documentation notes a "new Remote application for iPhone or iPod touch to control iTunes playback from anywhere in your home — a free download from the App Store." The software is a 50MB download from Mac OS X Software Update or available via the Web.

Apple's App Store has arrived. Apple launched its App Store Thursday which features third-party applications for the iPhone 3G one day in advance of the much anticipated iPhone 3G which goes on sale Friday. The App Store became available this morning when Apple released its 7.7 version of the iTunes software. The App Store will also be available directly from the iPhone 3G's software.

More than 10 million programs downloaded from iTunes App Store already Along with their announcement that they've already sold a million iPhones, Apple is making a big deal about the number of programs downloaded from their newly opened iTunes App Store. The App Store offers a variety of programs, most costing less than $10, for the iPhone 3G. Apple has unveiled the eighth incarnation of the iPhone SDK beta, but for the first time, requires users to install the pre-release version of iTunes 7.7. An insider tells MacNN that the new beta is compatible with the finalized iPhone 2.0 OS, and is App Store upload-capable – a feature most likely present in the new version of iTunes. The 3G iPhone, v2.0 OS, and App Store are set to land in July, with the apps themselves theoretically ranging from free to just shy of $1000.

Macrumors noticed that the latest beta of iTunes 7.7 seeded to devs includes this note: "Also use the new Remote application for iPhone or iPod touch to control iTunes playback from anywhere in your home — a free download from the App Store." The App Store for iTunes launched just ahead of the new iPhone 3G on July 10th to better advertise the device's touchscreen and wireless networking capabilities. Hosting over 1500 applications for free download or purchase at time of writing, it's since proven to be one of the more popular destinations for iPhone owners. According to Apple CEO Steve Jobs, the App Store has reached 60 million downloads, generating $30 million USD in sales in 30 days. Assuming sales keep pace, App Store downloads could net Apple nearly $360 million USD in yearly revenue:

iPhone App store; why do we need 10 tip calculators?As I posted yesterday, I updated my first generation iPhone to the 2.0 firmware and started trying out 3rd party applications from the App Store. Since there are no trials available I had to pull the trigger on a couple applications I really wanted to try out and bought Super Monkey Ball and SplashMoney so far. Browsing through the iPhone App Store was fun, interesting, and a bit frustrating and I came away with a few impressions.

Before the App Store for Apple's iPhone went live it had been predicted by some analysts to have the potential to become a $1 billion business by 2009. It is now being reported that Apple shifted an impressive $30 million worth of software in the first month, which would make those predictions seem entirely possible. Steve Jobs has pointed out that Apple only receive 30% of the money made from the app store (though 30% still seems a nice chunk to me), with 70% going to the app developers. An example of a hugely successful application is Sega's Super Monkeyball, which they say sold over 300,000 copies (at $9.99) in its first 20 days. Also of interest is that Jobs has confirmed that Apple has built in a feature that can allow them to remotely kill and remove any app sold through the store on a users iPhone.

Despite only launching this morning, the iTunes App Store already features a list of top free applications for download, starting off with Apple's own Remote app. Remote allows users to control iTunes or music through an Apple TV directly from their iPhone or iPod touch, in addition to AirTunes-connected speakers. AOL and Facebook round out the top three apps with AOL Instant Messenger, and the Facebook contact viewing/management/interaction application.

Apple on Monday released iPhone 2.0.2, an update to its second-generation software for the original iPhone and iPhone 3G. The update is about 242MB and first appeared via iTunes just after 5PM EST. As is usually the case with iPhone updates, Apple provided few details, saying simply that the update contains "bug fixes," and links to existing online iPhone support resources. Over the weekend the company seeded iPhone v2.1b4, a private beta, to developers, but removed the much anticipated 'push" feature that would allow applications to respond to internet triggers (new email, an IM, etc.) without being open. The major software update along with the unique "push service" was announced in June 2008 at Apple's WWDC and was expected to launch in September, according to Apple CEO Steve Jobs.
