We’ve seen some cheesy MP3 players over the years.. but this has got to be one of the cheesiest. It’s the Star Wars Darth Vader MP3 player and really now.. this is an MP3 player that ONLY a die hard Star Wars fan could possibly love. There’s really nothing at all special with this player aside from the picture of good ‘ol Darth himself. You get 512 MB of space, a built-in radio, and support for WMA and MP3 file formats. Yup.. pretty lame.

When your country builds 70% of the world's electronic toys, it's pretty easy to to come up with some interesting commemerative items, for say, the Olympics. In this case, Chinese workers put their $40-a-month efforts into an MP3 player shaped like the birds nest inspired Bejing stadium. The Bejing MP3 offers a choice of capacity ranging from 1GB to 4GB, handles the usual MP3/WMA combo, and has a small LCD display. Otherwise, it is a simple bare bones player. Oh wait, did I mention that the unit has a matching speaker? The Bejing Stadium MP3 player is priced cheap enough, $19.99 for the 1GB and $32.56 for the 4GB unit. Another $12.98 gets the matching speaker.

(Review) - As if the iPod Nano didn’t already have a number of flavors, Apple had to release a special edition just for kicks. You can think of the new iPod Nano (PRODUCT) Red as the U2 version of the Nano series. We can’t say we dislike the new (PRODUCT) Red, since it’s quite vibrant and rather unique, yet minimal. Also, the features and specifications are exactly the same as other Nano players, except the (PRODUCT) Red is made for a good cause, which we will get to later in the review.

Caught this latest update of the top MP3 player manufacturers from the Wall Street Journal. The provider of the data is, of course, NPD, a group whose figures we take with a grain of salt. No surprise here that Apple is number one in MP3, though with a market share that has grown from two-thirds market share to nearly three-out of four players. SanDisk remains at number two, but hey look...Microsoft's Zune line has moved into number three, albeit with a modest 4% share of the market. Still, that's better that the 2% held by Sony and Creative Labs. We are assuming that NPD is including portables that handle video too, simply because that would otherwise imply that Apple's shuffle, the only audio-only MP3 player in its line, has 71% of the market alone.

BEIJING, July 18 /Xinhua-PRNewswire/ -- CCID Consulting, China's leading research, consulting and IT outsourcing service provider, and the first Chinese consulting firm listed in Hong Kong (Hong Kong: 8235.HK), recently released its article on the MP3 market. Any product has to experience four periods -- an introduction period, a growing period, a mature period and a recession period. After the introduction period in 2001, the growing period during 2002-2004, the mature period during 2005-2006, China's MP3 market has entered the terminal stage of the rapid growing period in 2007: the number of brands are reducing and the sales volume is shrinking. And while there are no hard specs surrounding this rendering except that it's "coming soong," it will likely pick up where the Samsung U3 left off, which is to say it wants the iPod Shuffle's head. By far the most difficult (read: impossible) question for me to answer is: what is the very best MP3 player/headphone/iPod speaker/etc? That's because there is no single device in any given category that is perfect for every person. There is a healthy handful of MP3 players that I think are excellent, but finding the right device for an individual has a lot to do with personal preference and requirements. I can, however, tell you what I would buy for myself. Also this week: how to judge the best time to buy a new MP3 player.

"Recently I read a review of an mp3 player where the author purposely chose not to discuss sound quality because, in the author’s words, 'The chosen player has a great deal to do with how you access your music, but very little to do with how it sounds…' That got me thinking. Do all mp3 players sound alike? They are all digital, so it’s the same 1’s and 0’s playing the music, so how can there be a difference in sound quality? I have tested some mp3 players myself and have noticed drastic differences. I have trouble believing that mp3 players don’t influence sound quality that much. They have different components, circuitry, software and build tolerances, so how can there not be a difference?"

Last weekend a dear friend called up to say how his laptop had crashed and how he can now never take a backup of the music on his iPod. That's because, and most iPod owners know this, there is no way to actually copy back the music on your iPod. It only works one way: PC to iPod. Apple has deliberately created a convuluted database structure that prevents you from hooking your iPod to your PC and then copying back the mp3 files and videos and so on.
