Insiders point to video on French iTunes Store soon: related news

Insiders point to video on French iTunes Store soon

When Apple began adding video content to the German iTunes Store in early April, the country became just the third non-US iTunes Store to get TV shows. But there are more than just three countries where the iTunes music is available (21 by my count), so of course, there is continuing speculation over which country might be the next to get video. That speculation has now centered upon France, as French site ElectronLibre recently reported that video content may appear on the French iTunes Store sometime soon.

France: iTunes Video Store to open soon

The iTunes Video Store in France will be announced really soon. You can already browse the video section of the iTunes Store if you search the name of a TV show or a series, but it’s still not mentioned on itunes home page.

Blockbuster beware: iTunes Store gets same-day DVD releases

In January, Apple flipped the switch on movie rentals for the iTunes Store to much fanfare. A lot of customers don't want to own movies, digital downloads are just plain convenient, and the move seemed to finally crack the major studio nut and catch their attention. Since the announcement, the iTunes Store has been slowly but steadily marching towards a respectable selection of films from all the major studios, as well as independents. Despite this new beat in Apple's step, a number of quirks in the iTunes Store's movie offering have annoyed customers. First and foremost was the release delay: films had a 30-day lead time on DVD before arriving in the iTunes Store, and the majority of new releases were only available for rent, not to purchase.

Bell Canada opens online video store as P2P debate rages on

Sometimes I get the itch to work in PR. No, it doesn't happen much, but once in a while I see the sort of inexplicable corporate decision that makes me long to have been in the room when it was being discussed. Case in point: yesterday's announcement from Bell Canada that the telecom behemoth was officially launching its downloadable video store... just as Bell is caught up in a government inquiry into its traffic-shaping practices. It's hard to imagine a time at which touting your own downloadable video store makes less sense than when you're on the hot seat for throttling all P2P traffic, much of which competes with Bell to offer video (including entirely legal BitTorrent downloads from the CBC). Yes, you could look worse as a company, but puppies and shotguns would probably need to be involved.
