Clear Channel puts Apple's iTunes link in FM digital stations

Clear Channel Communications, the largest U.S. radio broadcaster, has linked all of its digital FM music stations to Apple's iTunes store, giving listeners a way to buy songs they've heard. Tagging technology has been added to 345 digital stations, allowing listeners to identify and purchase the songs, San Antonio-based Clear Channel said in a statement Monday. The partnership allows Clear Channel to share in revenue from iTunes, the biggest retailer of digital music, while luring listeners. Radio companies are introducing so-called HD and Internet stations to compete with satellite radio and win back advertisers who have migrated to the Web and cable television. The tagged HD stations are digital broadcasts of traditional FM music-oriented stations that use analog technology.

MySpace Teams With Record Companies To Create Music Site

The New York Times reports on a deal between MySpace and three of the four major music labels to develop a new music website. Users will be able to stream songs for free, purchase downloadable tracks, and (possibly) pay a flat monthly fee for unlimited access. From the Times: "Exact terms of the deal and details about the new site, like prices for downloaded music tracks, were not disclosed. But MySpace did say the site would offer songs free of digital rights management software or D.R.M., which is used to prevent illicit copying but can create technical hurdles for buyers. The songs would be playable on any portable music device, including Apple's iPod. For the music industry, the deal is partly born of desperation. In the face of widespread, escalating online piracy, music sales dropped to $11.

Digital music record stores focus on sound and copy flexibility

Cologne, Germany - One of the most important body parts for music fans is the pointer fingers - for flipping through CDs or LPs. Audiophiles may need to find a new way to get in touch with their music, though, given that online downloads may someday be the only way to purchase music. Files without copy protection are starting to play an increasingly important role. Sound considerations are also coming to the fore, a trend sure to delight classical music fans. A number of shops, including the soon-to-open Nowdio.de, are focusing on "MP3 alone, and they don't have DRM," says the store's product manager Carsten Schumacher. DRM stands for Digital Rights Management - and "no DRM" means: the user can burn downloaded songs as often as desired or move them freely to any computer or MP3 player.
