After selling 20 million copies and earning over a billion dollars, Activision Blizzard, the creators of Guitar Hero, think the next logical step for the franchise is to open up an iTunes-like digital music store. “I don’t think there have been a lot of credible alternatives to iTunes, but Guitar Hero certainly has that potential,” Bobby Kotick, chief executive of Activision Blizzard said, adding that “the natural evolution” of the franchise would be to create an online music platform. Activision Blizzard was formed yesterday as the result of the merger between Activision (the company behind the Guitar Hero franchise) and Vivendi Games, the group responsible for World of Warcraft and the gaming arm of the company that also owns Universal Music.

According to rollingstone.com, Guitar Hero will be getting multiple songs from arguably the greatest rock star the world has ever known, Jimi Hendrix. "The ultimate guitar hero, Jimi Hendrix, is finally coming to the Guitar Hero game franchise, according to Janie Hendrix, who oversees his estate. The Hendrix estate, which had difficulty locating the original masters until now, has delivered multiple songs — including 'Purple Haze', 'Foxy Lady' and 'Little Wing' — to GH's developers, although it’s not yet clear which tracks they will use. The next edition of the game, Guitar Hero: World Tour, hits stores October 27th."

Michael Shorrock, Sony's director of third-party relations, announced on the Playstation blog that he's been working with the major music game developers (i.e. Rock Band's Harmonix, Guitar Hero's Activision, and others) to ensure basic compatibility for peripherals between the games. Joystiq has a compatibility matrix that shows which devices work with which games. "...Rock Band 2's guitar and drum set will work with Guitar Hero: World Tour and with Rock Revolution. Conversely, Rock Revolution's drum set will work with both Guitar Hero: World Tour and Rock Band 2. In addition, Guitar Hero: World Tour and Rock Band 2 will both support the SingStar microphones. We're still working hard to ensure compatibility between the Guitar Hero and Rock Band titles currently on the market, and we hope to have an announcement on that shortly.

iTunes can easily share its content over your local network. But if you want a complete copy of your media library on more than one Mac, you’ll need to synchronize some files. However, merely copying, say, a folder full of AAC files from one Mac to another is not enough; you must also copy the iTunes Library files containing metadata, playlists, and other important information. And therein lies the rub: If you’ve changed the contents of iTunes on both Macs, merely copying the iTunes Library files in one direction or the other (manually or with a file-synchronization utility) won’t synchronize their contents, so neither iTunes library will be correct. For example, songs present on both Macs’ hard disks may not actually show up in iTunes on one Mac or the other, and one Mac’s playlists might entirely overwrite the other’s.

This is hardly a new phenomenon, but the Wall Street Journal is noting that some bands and some record labels are avoiding putting music on iTunes (or in some cases, pulling music off iTunes) in an effort to force people to buy the full album, rather than just a few tracks. There are plenty of reasons to dislike iTunes, but it seems hard to believe that this does anything positive for the bands in question. The article quotes Kid Rock's manager, who compares apples to oranges, by pointing out that people who are on iTunes sell more single songs than albums, but that's rather meaningless in comparing to an artist (like Kid Rock) who's not on iTunes at all. Not putting your music where people want it is only going to piss them off.
