OverDrive to Distribute MP3 Audiobooks

OverDrive, a digital book distributor to online retailers, libraries, and schools, announced that it will expand its catalog of download audiobooks to include titles in MP3 format without DRM. Borders, Inc. will offer OverDrive MP3 Audiobooks without DRM online and at Digital Centers inside select Borders store locations. OverDrive MP3 Audiobooks will be compatible with nearly every MP3 player and mobile phone on the market including iPod, Zune, iPhone, and Creative Labs products. OverDrive MP3 Audiobooks will go on sale in May at Borders.com with titles from Random House Audio, Blackstone Audiobooks, Hachette Book Group, Books in Motion, plus dozens of other publishers. The new catalog of MP3 titles for retail will be added to OverDrive’s catalog of approximately 20,000 DRM-protected digital audiobooks and over 100,000 eBooks.

April 17, 2008 - Sales figures for the month of March are in from the NPD Group. Nintendo continues to dominate hardware sales, with North Americans picking up more than 721,000 Wii systems and 698,000 Nintendo DS units in the month of March. PlayStation Portable came in third with 297,000 units, followed by the Xbox 360 with 262,000 systems last month. The battle is getting closer for the PlayStation 3 as it came in oh-so-close to the Xbox 360 in March: 257,000 systems sold through to consumers. And bringing up the rear is the last generation of PlayStation, with PS2s still selling impressive numbers: 216,000 PS2 systems sold to consumers in March.

Dorkz brings news of a class-action settlement from Creative Labs over the capacity of their HDD MP3 players. Evidently they calculated drive capacity in base-10 (1,000,000,000 bytes per GB) instead of base-2 (1,073,741,824 bytes per GB). The representative plaintiff is entitled to $5,000, and everyone else who bought one of the HDD MP3 players in the past several years gets a 50% discount on a new 1GB player[PDF]. They can also opt for a 20% discount on anything ordered from Creative's online store. Creative has made available all of the necessary legal forms. Seagate lost a similar lawsuit late last year.

Microsoft's Xbox 360 video-game console has 42 percent of the market in Europe, and the 80-euro (US$123) price cut is aimed at protecting Microsoft's base. With the cuts, a 20GB Xbox 360 will cost 270 euros, the Xbox 360 Elite 370 euros and the Xbox 360 Arcade euros. An analyst does not expect lower prices for Microsoft's Xbox 360 in the U.S.

Stony Stevenson writes "Hot on the heels of a recent hack in which 10,000 sites were compromised, researchers have disclosed a new large-scale attack. Researchers at McAfee estimated that the attack has been active for roughly one week, and in that time frame has managed to place itself on roughly 200,000 web pages. Most of the infected pages are running the phpBB forum software, said McAfee. The compromised pages are embedded with a Javascript file that links to the site hosting the attack."

However, the company said that it has no plans of bringing the cost down for the Indian market.
