Caught this latest update of the top MP3 player manufacturers from the Wall Street Journal. The provider of the data is, of course, NPD, a group whose figures we take with a grain of salt. No surprise here that Apple is number one in MP3, though with a market share that has grown from two-thirds market share to nearly three-out of four players. SanDisk remains at number two, but hey look...Microsoft's Zune line has moved into number three, albeit with a modest 4% share of the market. Still, that's better that the 2% held by Sony and Creative Labs. We are assuming that NPD is including portables that handle video too, simply because that would otherwise imply that Apple's shuffle, the only audio-only MP3 player in its line, has 71% of the market alone.

When your country builds 70% of the world's electronic toys, it's pretty easy to to come up with some interesting commemerative items, for say, the Olympics. In this case, Chinese workers put their $40-a-month efforts into an MP3 player shaped like the birds nest inspired Bejing stadium. The Bejing MP3 offers a choice of capacity ranging from 1GB to 4GB, handles the usual MP3/WMA combo, and has a small LCD display. Otherwise, it is a simple bare bones player. Oh wait, did I mention that the unit has a matching speaker? The Bejing Stadium MP3 player is priced cheap enough, $19.99 for the 1GB and $32.56 for the 4GB unit. Another $12.98 gets the matching speaker.

We’ve seen some cheesy MP3 players over the years.. but this has got to be one of the cheesiest. It’s the Star Wars Darth Vader MP3 player and really now.. this is an MP3 player that ONLY a die hard Star Wars fan could possibly love. There’s really nothing at all special with this player aside from the picture of good ‘ol Darth himself. You get 512 MB of space, a built-in radio, and support for WMA and MP3 file formats. Yup.. pretty lame.

"Recently I read a review of an mp3 player where the author purposely chose not to discuss sound quality because, in the author’s words, 'The chosen player has a great deal to do with how you access your music, but very little to do with how it sounds…' That got me thinking. Do all mp3 players sound alike? They are all digital, so it’s the same 1’s and 0’s playing the music, so how can there be a difference in sound quality? I have tested some mp3 players myself and have noticed drastic differences. I have trouble believing that mp3 players don’t influence sound quality that much. They have different components, circuitry, software and build tolerances, so how can there not be a difference?"

In the Taiwan market, white-box MP3 players made in China have been selling in the market for some time due to their comparatively low prices, but these products have been losing ground to leading local Taiwan brands since early July, as local players have reduced their prices and offer better support, according to industry sources.

This week, online music retailer Rhapsody has launched a new DRM-free music store in the US, allowing users to download unprotected 256kbps MP3 files for $0.99 per track (or $9.99 per album). While Rhapsody is just the latest in a string of online music stores to offer DRM-free music (including Amazon's MP3 store and Apple's iTunes Plus), it bangs another nail in the coffin of DRM in the online music business. We think the move away from DRM will benefit consumers, device vendors and online music retailers, by removing one of the biggest barriers to consumer acceptance of digital music sales.

Dell is unmatched as a high-volume supplier, but its business model doesn't work as well when it can only achieve low sales volumes. It therefore waited until portable MP3 players had become a substantial market before launching its own system in 2003, then dropped out in 2006, when it failed to get more than 3% or so of the US market.

By far the most difficult (read: impossible) question for me to answer is: what is the very best MP3 player/headphone/iPod speaker/etc? That's because there is no single device in any given category that is perfect for every person. There is a healthy handful of MP3 players that I think are excellent, but finding the right device for an individual has a lot to do with personal preference and requirements. I can, however, tell you what I would buy for myself. Also this week: how to judge the best time to buy a new MP3 player.
