Days after celebrating iTunes' fifth anniversary, Apple on Thursday is expected to announce a breakthrough movie distribution deal that would allow it to sell new releases at the iTunes Store, offering a digital content delivery alternative to DVD sales. The new agreement will include major studios such as Fox, Walt Disney Studios, Warner Bros., Paramount, Universal, Sony Pictures, Lionsgate and New Line as well as smaller boutiques such as Magnolia and Image Entertainment, but will leave out new titles from MGM, the report said. The Hollywood Reporter notes that the move would allow a broad slate of top-shelf films to be offered day-and-date with home video releases, potentially cannibalizing DVD sales, while simulataneousl putting "significant" pressure on iTunes competitors ranging from Amazon's Unbox to Microsoft XBox Live Marketplace

iTunes to sell movies on the DVD release date Apple has made it clear in recent months that they believe their iTunes online store is capable of taking the lead in online movie downloads in much the same way it practically created the online music market. Now it appears they've taken a significant step in that direction by getting agreements with a number of studios to offer downloads on the same day movies are released on DVD.

In January, Apple flipped the switch on movie rentals for the iTunes Store to much fanfare. A lot of customers don't want to own movies, digital downloads are just plain convenient, and the move seemed to finally crack the major studio nut and catch their attention. Since the announcement, the iTunes Store has been slowly but steadily marching towards a respectable selection of films from all the major studios, as well as independents. Despite this new beat in Apple's step, a number of quirks in the iTunes Store's movie offering have annoyed customers. First and foremost was the release delay: films had a 30-day lead time on DVD before arriving in the iTunes Store, and the majority of new releases were only available for rent, not to purchase.

Apple is allegedly paying more for its same-day-as-DVD iTunes movies than it charges customers for the downloads, indicating that the company views the movies as a loss leader to help sell other products. The ever-popular "person familiar with the matter" told the Wall Street Journal (subscription) that Apple pays the movie studios a wholesale price of $16 per movie while only charging customers $14.99 for new releases. The $1.01 loss on each movie sale is sure to add up, but Apple is apparently confident that such an agreement will pay off in the long run.
