The App store went live a few minutes ago and the remote app we saw last week went live as well. It controls your iTunes through a screen that looks just like the regular iPhone/iPod touch player, and it only works through Wi-Fi. You can control AppleTVs, too, and you can also control speaker output.

Apple on Monday released iPhone 2.0.2, an update to its second-generation software for the original iPhone and iPhone 3G. The update is about 242MB and first appeared via iTunes just after 5PM EST. As is usually the case with iPhone updates, Apple provided few details, saying simply that the update contains "bug fixes," and links to existing online iPhone support resources. Over the weekend the company seeded iPhone v2.1b4, a private beta, to developers, but removed the much anticipated 'push" feature that would allow applications to respond to internet triggers (new email, an IM, etc.) without being open. The major software update along with the unique "push service" was announced in June 2008 at Apple's WWDC and was expected to launch in September, according to Apple CEO Steve Jobs.

Apple TV's onscreen keyboard is an exercise in stress management, especially with its morsel of a remote. Not pimped by Apple is that the iPhone's Remote app solves this by presenting the iPhone's keyboard anytime you need to type and would otherwise pop a blood vessel, like when you're searching for "Jay and Seth Vs. the Apocalypse" on YouTube or plumbing through iTunes. Handy for the weekend, no? [Daring Fireball via Mac Rumors]

As most owners of Apple's popular iPhone 3G know, it contains built-in Wi-Fi networking similar to that of a laptop computer. Some iPhone 3G owners don't realize, however, that their phone will automatically connect to certain wireless access points without their knowledge. The only robust way to prevent these unexpected connections is to turn off Wi-Fi on the iPhone 3G when not using it. More - Turn Off Your iPhone 3G Wi-Fi Connections For Safety

Apple this week began posting information for iPhone users intending to update their device to the new iPhone 3G. A new support document explains how to replace an original iPhone with an iPhone 3G using the same carrier: "If you follow these steps to backup your original iPhone first, and then restore the backup to your iPhone 3G, your saved SMS messages, email accounts, photos, notes, and other personal settings will be present on your iPhone 3G," the company noted. The instructions indicate that iPhone users in the US will not need to transfer their SIM card (a new one will be provided with the iPhone 3G) and describes how to transfer settings, personal info, SMS messages, and other data to the new device using iTunes' backup iPhone feature.

Before the App Store for Apple's iPhone went live it had been predicted by some analysts to have the potential to become a $1 billion business by 2009. It is now being reported that Apple shifted an impressive $30 million worth of software in the first month, which would make those predictions seem entirely possible. Steve Jobs has pointed out that Apple only receive 30% of the money made from the app store (though 30% still seems a nice chunk to me), with 70% going to the app developers. An example of a hugely successful application is Sega's Super Monkeyball, which they say sold over 300,000 copies (at $9.99) in its first 20 days. Also of interest is that Jobs has confirmed that Apple has built in a feature that can allow them to remotely kill and remove any app sold through the store on a users iPhone.

The App Store for iTunes launched just ahead of the new iPhone 3G on July 10th to better advertise the device's touchscreen and wireless networking capabilities. Hosting over 1500 applications for free download or purchase at time of writing, it's since proven to be one of the more popular destinations for iPhone owners. According to Apple CEO Steve Jobs, the App Store has reached 60 million downloads, generating $30 million USD in sales in 30 days. Assuming sales keep pace, App Store downloads could net Apple nearly $360 million USD in yearly revenue:

Apple handhelds may in the future be able to stream content from a remote iTunes library, a newly-published patent application indicates. Titled Remote access of media items, the filing describes a system in which handheld owners would be able to access audio, video and photos over a network. Unlike the current iTunes sharing scheme, however, people would also be able to access games, and reach everything over the Internet, whether through wired, Wi-Fi or cellular networks.

L. Miriam writes "Apple launched the iTunes App store for the iPhone and iPod Touch today, following the earlier launch of iTunes 7.7. There are over 500 applications available for download, with prices ranging from free to around $35. Both MySpace and Facebook apps are there, as well as a mix of games, utilities and ebooks. You can download applications now, but you can't do anything with them until the iPhone/iPod 2.0 firmware is released. The App Store can't be accessed directly through iTunes, but Mobile Computer explains how to get to it, and has a few screenshots, too."

In May, AT&T briefly gave all iPhone users free Wi-Fi for a short period. The free Wi-Fi party ended quickly after the company realized that by simply switching the browser user agent to mobile Safari, anyone could get free access. Shortly thereafter, references to the free Wi-Fi again popped up briefly on the AT&T website, only to disappear with the company offering no comment. Now a user submits this link to our news queue showing that references to free AT&T Wi-Fi for smartphones has once again popped up on the AT&T website. Says big blue:

Apple fans, old and new, got to experience the good side and the dark side of Apple's product launch mania during Friday's iPhone 3G release. Lines were long, though some said not as long as for the original iPhone, but the big news was all the iPhone activation problems. It’s no surprise that Apple’s Remote application headed up the App Store’s list of Top Free Apps immediately after the iPhone application store launched. After installing Remote on an iPhone or iPod touch, the portable’s touchscreen becomes the best remote control I’ve yet seen for controlling an Apple TV - or iTunes running on a computer - located on the same local network.
