iTunes finally reaches 1,000 movie mark, a few months late

When the iTunes movie rental service first made its debut, it didn't take very long for someone to point out that the Emperor didn't have any clothes (or in this case, that Steve didn't have many movie rentals). Only 400 or so movies were available when the target date for 1,000 rentals, something that we thought might be due to the slowness of licensing agreements from the movie studios. Apple and the studios seem to have gotten their acts together, though. Macworld found in its most recent checks that the iTunes Store now boasts over 1,000 movie rentals.

iTunes HD Movie goal not quite met

Apple has reached one of its goals announced at the Macworld Expo in January while missing another, with 100 high-definition Dolby Digital-enabled movies available in the iTunes store of a total library of 604 movie rental titles. iLounge writes that Apple had set a goal of 1000 rental titles by the end of February, but has since fallen short. Apple's main competition in the digital rental marketplace comes from Amazon's Unbox service, and Netflix, who offer thousands of titles.

Russia may say "zdravstvuite" to iTunes Store next week

Although Apple does have a presence in Russia, it's not often that we hear news about Apple's activities there (perhaps in part due to Russia's reputation for rampant music/movie/software/anything piracy). A blip appeared on the radar this week, though, when rumors surrounding the possible launch of a new iTunes Store appeared. According to CNews, advertisements suggest that the Russian iTunes Store is coming, and will be launching in just a week on April 21.

Blockbuster beware: iTunes Store gets same-day DVD releases

In January, Apple flipped the switch on movie rentals for the iTunes Store to much fanfare. A lot of customers don't want to own movies, digital downloads are just plain convenient, and the move seemed to finally crack the major studio nut and catch their attention. Since the announcement, the iTunes Store has been slowly but steadily marching towards a respectable selection of films from all the major studios, as well as independents. Despite this new beat in Apple's step, a number of quirks in the iTunes Store's movie offering have annoyed customers. First and foremost was the release delay: films had a 30-day lead time on DVD before arriving in the iTunes Store, and the majority of new releases were only available for rent, not to purchase.

Partnership to create iTunes storefronts for radio stations

As part of its recent efforts to expand the reach of the iTunes Store, Apple has been getting quite cozy with radio, and coming up with as many iTunes tie-ins as it can. First, we saw iTunes tagging and purchasing for HD radio tracks, but Apple is casting a wider net for its next tie-in and integrating iTunes with radio stations as a whole. Just what is this new venture? Well, Macworld has some coverage on a recent partnership between Apple and a company called Emmis Interactive, which will provide radio stations with web-based iTunes storefronts.

iTunes Movie Buyers Lose Wait

Those who buy downloaded movies through Apple's iTunes service usually have had to wait until 30 days after the movie had been released on physical DVDs. However, Apple has announced deals with many of its partnering studios that will allow iTunes to offer movie sales on the same day the DVD is out. Those who prefer to rent, however, will still have to observe the waiting period.

iTunes Store gets new content from three networks

Although the iTunes movie rental service may be a bit behind the curve when it comes to the number of titles available, there's plenty of non-movie content, like television shows available for purchase. As part of Apple's usual weekly release of updates and content, the company added a few more television offerings. As pointed out by a quick check by AppleInsider, Starz, Manga Entertainment, and the Independent Film Channel (IFC) all made their iTunes Store debut yesterday.
