Might iTunes Shut Down?

The biggest threat to iTunes may not come from the AC/DC after all, but from within Apple itself. On Thursday, the Copyright Royalty Board is expected to rule on a request from the National Music Publishers' Association, the group that represents musicians and songwriters, to increase royalty rates by 66% percent from 9 cents a track to 15 cents. Yesterday, Fortune reported that in a written statement to the Copyright Royalty Board last year, iTunes vice president Eddie Cue threatened to pull the plug on the iTunes Store if royalty rates to music publishers were increased. "Apple has repeatedly made it clear that it is in this business to make money," Cue said in his statement. "And most likely would not continue to operate [the iTunes music store] if it were no longer possible to do so profitably.

Apple threatens to shut down iTunes over royalty hike

Apple considers shutting down their online music store if panel decide royalties for downloaded tracks should be increased

Copyright Royalty Board has good news for Apple iTunes

Copyright Royalty Board has good news for Apple iTunesThe US based Copyright Royalty Board has fixed the royalty that songwriters receive on sales of CDs and digital downloads at 9.1 cents per song.

Royalty Increases Would Threaten iTunes Music Store?

A royalty increase for music tracks distributed online is being ruled on today would see rates increased from 9 cents to 15 cents a track. According to a recently released statement that was originally made in April 2007 by Apple vice president Eddy Cue, such a rate increase could potentially push the iTunes store into operating at a loss, leaving the company in a difficult position. If you believe that actually would be the case if rates were to increase, then it would probably be even harder to consider that Apple may shut down the iTunes music store because of it. Stranger things have happened (particularly if you look at recent economic events), but does this hold water or is it simply Apple aiming to get the public on side before any changes are made?
