Dead Space game review: related news

It's Official, Australia Needs a Space Agency

Dante_J writes "In the final report published by the Australian Senate inquiry into 'The Current State of Australia's Space Science & Industry Sector' entitled 'Lost in Space? Setting a new direction for Australia's space science and industry sector,' it calls for the formation of a 'Space Industry Advisory Council' to oversee the creation of a fully-fledged Australian Space Agency. Of the top 20 GDP nations, Australia is the only one without a Space Agency, which impacts on many aspects of ordinary life, not to mention Research and Engineering endeavors. Every satellite operated by Australia is owned by another party and the costs of this alone are comparable to that of a Space Agency. The report is a tidy piece that drew upon submissions form Andy Thomas, and an impressive collection of Australian Academics and Space Science entities fr

Dead Space Wants To Scare You

Kotaku recently ran a story questioning whether the survival-horror genre still exists, and how Dead Space may or may not fit into it. With reviews for the game starting to come in, Ars Technica reports that the game is, indeed, both scary and good. Gamespy wrote up a Dead Space survival guide, and Gamasutra has a lengthy interview with the game's senior producer. In the production of the game, the developers studied things like car wrecks and war scenes to increase the level of realism. They also want the game's sounds to terrify players, including appropriately timed silence. The launch trailer is also available, though it does contain spoilers.

Tech Test Drive: 'Dead Space' (Xbox 360)

Occasionally a video game comes along that you can't ignore, and "Dead Space" is one. A game loaded with high production values, gripping story and the backing of publishing giant Electronic Arts, "Dead Space" is poised to be a blockbuster. "Dead Space" is a sci-fi survival tale combined with the horror of a Clive Barker film. When a mining space ship comes into contact with a mysterious alien artifact, its communications with Earth are mysteriously cut off. Engineer Isaac Clarke is sent to repair the communications array but finds himself in a living nightmare.

SPACE: Chinese Space Walkers Stalk The Space Station

November 3, 2008: On September 27th, a Chinese Shenzhou space capsule came within 45 kilometers of the International Space Station, and two of the three crewmen made the first Chinese space walk (going outside the spacecraft in their space suits.) Later, a small, 88 pound microsatellite (the BX-1) was released from the Shenzhou. This was supposed to be a science experiment, but the fact that the Shenzhou came so close to the International Space Station, and then released a smaller, maneuverable (via small gas jets) BX-1, indicated another satellite destruction drill. The BX-1 could easily have been directed at the nearby space station, and destroyed it.

SPACEHAB Sees Opportunity in Space Florida's Launch Complex

SPACEHAB, Incorporated (NASDAQ:SPAB), and its Astrotech subsidiary, leading providers of commercial space services, join with Space Florida in recognizing the immense opportunities for America's commercial space program in the joint Air Force Space Command and Space Florida Dedication Ceremony of Launch Complex 36. The Ceremony marked the symbolic "groundbreaking" following the announcement by the Air Force Space Command of its commitment to commercial space and its intention to lease LC36 at Cape Canaveral Air Force Station to Space Florida. The U.S. Air Force's official "intent to lease" the site to Space Florida includes the build-out of the launch pad to support multiple-customers and multi-vehicle configurations for commercial, civil and military customers.

Video Game Without DRM Has Piracy Rates About The Same As DRM'd Games

Reader SteveD sent in this story a week ago, but I just got around to looking at the details. Apparently the makers of the video game World of Goo, which (as mentioned) was released without DRM, have roughly calculated the rate of piracy on the game to be about 90%. The calculation is certainly a rough one, and people can quibble with the number, but the basic reasoning seems sound. A lot of folks focused on that 90% number, but didn't pay as much attention to the more important comparison: how this compared to a DRM'd game. The game makers noted that it had almost no difference compared to another game released with DRM, showing that adding the DRM did absolutely nothing to prevent piracy. So why do video game companies keep insisting they need DRM?

The ISS Marks 10 Years In Space

Matt_dk writes to point out the upcoming tenth anniversary of the International Space Station in two days' time. "On 20 November 1998, a Russian Proton rocket lifted off from the Baikonur Cosmodrome for a historic mission: It was carrying the first module of the International Space Station ISS, named Zarya (Russian for 'dawn'). This cargo and control module, which weighs about 20 tonnes and is almost 13 meters long, provides electrical power, propulsion, flight path guidance and storage space. The launch of the module... heralded a new era in space exploration, as, for the first time ever, lasting cooperation in space was achieved between Russia, the US, Europe, Canada and Japan. Over the next ten years, many other modules were brought into orbit, and ISS developed into the largest human outpost in space.

Dead Space: Downfall Blu-ray Review

"For Dead Space gamers, the story of how Ishimura's crew are wiped out after an alien artifact is brought on board and subsequently turned into the very creatures that killed them plays perfectly into the game's introduction. The film's somber final note ends at the precise moment the game begins with the nightmare of many transferred to the life of one. "

Ender in Exile

stoolpigeon writes "Orson Scott Card's work Ender's Game began as a novelette, which he says he wrote as a means of leading up to the full story he had developed, Speaker for the Dead. Ender's Game was published as a full novel in 1985, and won the Hugo and Nebula awards (as did Speaker for the Dead in '86 and '87). I think it is safe to say that Ender's Game is ensconced in its position as a science fiction classic. Now, 23 years later, Card has finished the first direct sequel to Ender's Game in his new novel Ender in Exile." Keep reading for the rest of JR's review.

Video game collisions I'd like to see

Mortal Kombat vs. DC Universe game boxI spent most of my Sunday night playing the new video game, "Mortal Kombat vs. DC Universe" in anticipation of getting the review into our holiday gift guide (read review). The game did a pretty good job of taking two distinct genres of science-fiction / video gaming / geek culture and merging them into an entertaining product.

Expert Can Speak on Space Debris Such as Lost NASA Tool Bag

Newswise - As NASA's lost tool bag continues to float in space, Auburn University has a credible source who can address space debris and its effect on space craft and satellites. Henry Brandhorst of our Space Research Institute and his team study how even the smallest speck of dust can devastate man-made materials in space. As an interesting visual, the Institute uses the second fastest gun in the country to blast tiny particles through a vacuum and into a variety of materials.

Review: Space Enterprise

Often, books examining the future of humanity in space take too narrow a view. They will look at launch vehicles and spacecraft, scientific goals and business applications, economic and policy, or subsets of these areas. Rarely, though, do such texts take a step back and try and integrate all of these items, as well as a more fundamental question: why doesor shouldhumanity want to go into space at all? That broad approach is attempted by Philip Harris in his new book, Space Enterprise.
