Networking with Ubuntu 8 04 and Windows Part III: related news

Networking with Ubuntu 8.04 and Windows, Part III

In the first installment of this tutorial series we configured Ubuntu to share with Windows and set your Computer Name and Workgroup values. In Part II, we discovered the nitty gritty of the network connection details in Ubuntu. Finally, we'll figure out exactly how to share the files on your Ubuntu machine. We'll cover basic sharing if you want to quickly get your files on the network and advanced sharing if you prefer to customize the sharing permissions or privileges.

Talking about Blogging Windows

Last week was an exciting week for Windows and blogging. Senior Vice Presidents Steven Sinofsky and Jon DeVaan launched a brand new blog called Engineering Windows 7 (or E7 for short). In case you don't know who these guys are, Jon DeVaan manages the engineering team responsible for creating the central (or "core") components and architecture of Windows and Steven Sinofsky manages the group responsible for the user experiences in both Windows and Windows Live. The Engineering Windows 7 blog is designed to create an open discussion about how we're making the next version of Windows - currently codenamed Windows 7 - and to create a background of understanding for the engineering decisions made in order to ship Windows 7.

How Dell Is Making Ubuntu Linux More Attractive

CWmike writes "Dell was the first of the major computer manufacturers to support pre-installed Linux, but it's not just pre-installing Linux. The Austin, Tex. company is also adding functionality to Ubuntu Linux on its desktops and laptops, writes Steven J. Vaughan-Nichols. It began by adding DVD-playback to its systems shipping with Ubuntu 7.10. With the recent release of Dell PCs with Ubuntu 8.04, Dell is now including "Fluendo GStreamer codices for mp3, wma (Windows Media Audio), and wmv (Windows Media Video) playback" in its latest Ubuntu-powered desktops and laptops. On Ubuntu systems with ATI or NIVDIA graphics, Dell also now supports HDMI output. Yesterday, Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer said his company hopes to steal a page from Apple's playbook and change how it works with hardware makers in an attempt to duplicate its rival's succ

Ubuntu hits new high in Linux boredom

Last weekend a friend was moaning about endless problems with Windows XP on his desktop PC. We installed Ubuntu 7.04 on it. The problems went away. That started me thinking about my own "daily driver" computer, a Dell Latitude that also runs Ubuntu 7.04, and it made me realize that I hadn't thought about my laptop or its operating system in many months. Linux -- especially Ubuntu -- has become so reliable and simple that for most end users it's simply not worth thinking about, any more than we think about tools like wrenches and screwdrivers. Does this mean desktop GNU/Linux has become so boring that it's not worth noticing?

Critical Week for Canonical and Ubuntu Linux

"Ubuntu got a big mainstream win in mid-2007 when Dell agreed to pre-install Ubuntu on selected Desktops. The VAR Guy and other Ubuntu followers expected (perhaps foolishly) that Dell rivals like Hewlett-Packard would quickly jump on the Ubuntu desktop bandwago. HP has won some Ubuntu-related customer deals, but has said little about its Ubuntu plans."

SQL Server and the Windows Server 2008 Firewall

We’ve long recommended that customers use the Windows Firewall to protect SQL Server installations. Starting with Windows XP/SP2, and continuing with Windows Vista, the firewall has been enabled by default on Windows client operating systems. Windows Server 2008 marks the first time this protection has been extended to a Windows Server OS.

Ubuntu MID makes Linux upwardly mobile (iTWire)

Ubuntu Linux owner Canonical has launched Ubuntu into the realm of mobile Internet devices with a release called Ubuntu MID. The new version of arguably the world's most popular desktop Linux distribution initially targeted the Samsung Q1U though the OS also runs on Intel's Atom-based Crown Beach development system. Ubuntu MID 8.04 is a developer release, but the software is expected to start to ship on commercial devices by the end of the year.

Top 10 Social Networking Sites

Here are my top 10 picks for the best social networking sites. Social networking sites are places where people can go online to meet other people and create their own "friend" list. Blogging, music, videos and photo albums are a big part of what makes a good social networking site into a great social networking site.

Windows XP Still Outselling Windows Vista

nandemoari writes with an excerpt from an InfoPackets article that says "While Microsoft excitedly tries to sway public opinion by touting that Windows Vista License sales top 180 Million units, Hewlett-Packard (HP) was busy smacking Microsoft down — reportedly shipping PCs with a Vista Business license but with Windows XP pre-loaded in the majority of business computers sold since the June 30 Windows XP execution date established by Microsoft — casting a lot of doubt over how many copies of Vista have actually been sold."

Dell Begins Ubuntu Linux 8.04 Pre-Installs

"...one-year into its Ubuntu desktop journey, Dell is giving the operating system another strong vote of confidence. The PC giant still doesn’t plan to offer Ubuntu on the server. But let’s not get ahead of ourselves. Dell’s endorsement of Ubuntu on the desktop remains a big win for the desktop Linux industry."

Dell Begins Ubuntu Linux 8.04 Pre-Installs

The VAR Guy has one (and, full disclosure, he loves it). But this is the year that Ubuntu was supposed to move from geek users to a broader set of consumers — thanks to the release of Ubuntu 8.04 in April 2008.".

Vista VPN setup guide, part 1: How to configure Windows Server 2008

Service provider takeaway: Value-added resellers (VARs) and networking consultants can help businesses provide remote access to users by setting up a virtual private network with Windows Vista and Windows Server 2008.

Move your business from Windows to Linux

Windows Vista debuted to muffled applause, followed by lackluster sales. Up until June 30, cash-strapped businesses looking to avoid the cost of upgrading to new Vista-compatible hardware could still purchase trusty Windows XP. Now, however, Windows XP is available only as a costly "downgrade" from Windows Vista--if you buy a copy of Vista, you can install the 6-year-old XP operating system using the Vista license.

2500 Windows 7 employees broken up into 25 feature teams

When the Engineering Windows 7 blog (E7) launched last week, many were happy that Microsoft had finally opened up an official channel of communication between the Windows 7 team and the public. Still, few expected that anything seriously groundbreaking would be announced on E7 anytime soon, especially considering Steven Sinofsky, head of the Windows and Windows Live Engineering Group, was at the helm. Sinofsky is known for his "under promise and over deliver" attitude so it's no surprise that few have bothered covering the first real blog post on E7. Sinofsky or not, I do believe that whatever is written on the E7 blog is worth taking a look at.

Ten sticking points for new Ubuntu users

With Ubuntu, Canonical has had notable success in convincing people to switch from other platforms, but potential Ubuntu users are still running into trouble in several areas. Having spent some time on Canonical's forums, I've identified 10 points that seem to be common sticking points for new users -- that is, problems that have the potential to prevent a new user from adopting Ubuntu in the long term. These problems span the entire Ubuntu experience, but they all have two things in common: they are all serious enough to evoke the dreaded "I tried Linux but it didn't work" excuse, and they are all solvable.

Moving from Windows to Linux: Switching Business Operating Systems

PC World — Windows Vista debuted to muffled applause, followed by lackluster sales.

Official Windows 7 blog goes live

Thanks Emil for pointing out that the Windows 7 Engineering blog has gone live. Its authors include Steven Sinofsky is in charge of the Windows and Windows Live Engineering Group and Jon DeVaan heads the Windows Core Operating System Division. There have been 2 posts on the blog and they don’t include any useful info.

Microsoft Opens Windows 7 Blog

Microsoft wants a discussion with customers and partners about Windows 7, its next-generation operating system. A new Microsoft Windows blog has been opened, and Microsoft plans two Windows events. Microsoft says it intends to listen to what the world has to say about Windows 7. An analyst said innovative features will also be needed.

Five Ways for Windows Users to Test Drive GNU/Linux

How do you get Windows users to try GNU/Linux? The question has no easy answer. Many users aren't clear what an operating system is, let alone how to install one. However, eager to recruit friends and family (if only to avoid tech-support on Windows), over the years the free and open source software (FOSS) community has developed a number of ways for Windows users to try GNU/Linux without turning their backs on Windows altogether.
