Microsoft May Shatter the Silence Today, Wall St. Journal Predicts

The Wall Street Journal thinks that Microsoft is about to break the break the deafening silence that has hung in the air since Yahoo! ignored Microsoft’s Saturday deadline to deal or be acquired by force at a lower price. The Journal thinks that Microsoft could nominate a proxy slate of directors to replace Yahoo!’s board but hold off on going directly to Yahoo!’s shareholders and say nothing about the price, a move that could let its shares recover from their 12% decline since Microsoft went public with its Yahoo! lust.

The ST-5950SD was at the top of Sony’s overlooked (and overbuilt) line that also included the ST-2950SD, ST-3950SD and ST-4950. The “SD” denotes Dolby capability, which is irrelevant today. The top three tuners in the line all seem to have been sleepers, but the ST-5950SD had particularly excellent specs, particularly for sensitivity, quieting and stereo separation. Microsoft's Good and Bad News

While Apple is clearly slowly eating into Microsoft’s dominance of the corporate desktop Microsoft isn’t smarting too much for many reasons. One reason is that Microsoft is the biggest developer of Mac software outside of Apple itself, and as it happens, Microsoft’s Mac business is booming. Word came today from Redmond’s Mac Business Unit today is that Office for Mac is selling faster than any previous version of Office for the Mac in the in the last 19 years. Of course Microsoft won’t say exactly how many units it has sold. As a percentage of revenue it’s not large enough that Microsoft would be required to break it out of its usual results, though I for one certainly wish it would. Also noted is that today is the day that Office for Mac’s first service pack, SP1, is being released.

Microsoft May Go Hostile, Yahoo May Announce Google Search Deal

After a pretty quiet several weeks, the Microsoft-Yahoo battle is suddenly getting a lot louder. After Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer said early Thursday he might walk out on its offer to buy Yahoo, the Internet portal floated the likelihood of a Google search ad deal. Then late Thursday night, Microsoft came right back with a leak in the Wall Street Journal that it’s leaning toward a hostile deal as early as Friday.

Google Continues to Dominate US, UK Searches in May 2008

Google continued its dominance over the U.S. search market in May, grabbing 68.29% of all searches in May 2008, seeing increases both month-over-month and year-over-year, according to Hitwise. Both Yahoo and MSN saw decreases from April 2008 and May 2007. Yahoo! saw 19.95% in May 2008, down from 20.28% in April and 20.89% last May. MSN was at 5.89% this may, down from 6.26% last month and 7.62% in May 2007. Ask.com, on the other hand, saw increases. They were at 4.23% last month, up from 4.17% in April and 3.92% in May 2007.

Microsoft ending WinXP sales today

Today marks the last day Microsoft will sell Windows XP to retailers and major PC manufacturers. After today, MSFT will officially be moving forward with Windows Vista. But those of you who are die hard WinXP fans don't worry, Microsoft executives have already confirmed that the OS will still be available for those who want it. For instance, Dell will continue to offer Windows XP as an option, although you'll have to pay extra for it, while online retailers like Newegg will to continue to carry copies of the OS as well. Microsoft's move will really only affect those users who want a nice, shiny retail boxed copy of Windows XP, sales of the OEM version will continue.

Microsoft Downplaying Recent DNS Vulnerability

Microsoft Watch writes "Microsoft downplays a recent DNS vulnerability in all Microsoft operating systems (XP, Vista, 2000, and 2003), claims Amit Klein, the security researcher who published the original vulnerability description (PDF) earlier this month. According to Klein, the description in Microsoft's Secure Windows Initiative blog entry is misleading, contains disinformation about the DNS transaction ID algorithm, and downplays the severity of the issue. Klein refutes Microsoft's claim that there is no way to reproduce the next transaction ID, given a series of observed transaction IDs. He shows that this is possible in his paper, which Microsoft had before publishing the SWI post, as well as on the series of data provided in the SWI blog itself.

In the latest developments between Microsoft (NSDQ: MSFT) and Yahoo (NSDQ: YHOO), Reuters reports that the two parties are now focused on arriving at a value for Yahoo’s search business, and that discussions could end in the “next week or so.” The story, which quoted an unnamed person familiar with the matter, said in the latest scenario, Microsoft is proposing to buy Yahoo’s search business and take a minority stake in the company after Yahoo sells off its Asian assets. May Sales Down 1% For Tandy Leather Factory

June 5, 2008 (FinancialWire) Tandy Leather Factory, Inc. (AMEX: TLF) (Current Market Cap: US$ 34.36 Mil.) said that its sales for the month of May were $4.5 million, down 1% from May 2007 sales of $4.6 million. Microsoft loses U.S. search users to Google and Yahoo

Microsoft lost Internet search users in the United States to Google and former takeover target Yahoo last month, research firm ComScore said. Microsoft, the world's biggest software maker, handled 8.5 percent of queries in May, down from 9.1 percent the month before, Reston, Va.-based ComScore said Thursday in a statement. Google extended its lead to 61.8 percent, and Yahoo grew to 20.6 percent, ComScore said. The companies are vying for a bigger piece of the $41 billion online advertising market. Microsoft's talks to buy Yahoo's search business for $1 billion ended last week, around the time Yahoo struck a deal to show some Google ads on its search pages. Microsoft's proposal would have included an $8 billion investment in Yahoo. Google handled 61.
