GPLv3 one year later: related news

A Year of GPLv3

javipas writes "GPLv3 and LGPLv3 were released one year ago, on 29 June 2007. Palamida, who tracks Open Source projects, has made a study of the current situation of these licenses along with AGPLv3, which was released later, in November. The number of projects that have made the transition to these licenses has grown over the last months, and it seems than AGPLv3 has captured a great interest lately. Black Duck Software, a company that tracks Open Source projects too, has made its own study with similar results, and although GPLv3 and its variants have a good adoption rate, the interviews published on the Palamida site (Stallman, Chris Di Bona) show that the acceptance of GPLv3 has still a long way to walk."

GPLv3, one year later

After 18 months of widespread consultation with community and corporate interests, the third versions of the GNU General Public License (GPL) and GNU Lesser General Public License (LGPL) were released one year ago on 29 June 2007. In November, they were joined by the GNU Affero General Public License (AGPL). Looking back at these licenses today, observers of free and open source software (FOSS) judge them a modest success, and credit them with continuing to educate people about free software.

Brace yourselves for the Women in Arts fest

Yesterday was the official launch of the 2008 Women in Arts Festival, and I find myself, as I found myself at this time last year and the year before, planning my schedule for the next four days with a mixture of anticipatory cringing and warm, fuzzy optimism. Every year I pin my hopes on there being at least one good party where I can expect to shake my ass without having it fondled by some beer-fuelled, ass-grabbing automaton, one mediocre art exhibition that I can spit upon with my elitist art-critic supper club and one jovial public penis-hating session at Constitution Hill to which I can bring my guitar and my dildo.

Best Buy (BBY) NewsBite - Analysts' Comments Pull Down BBY

Jul 10, 2008 (Fresh Brewed Media via COMTEX) -- BBY | Quote | Chart | News | PowerRating -- Best Buy (BBY) opened at $39.85. So far today the stock has hit a low of $38.25 and a high of $40.06. BBY is now trading at $38.42, down 1.43 (-3.59%). After hitting a one-year high of $53.9 in December, the stock has hit a new one-year low today. Shares of BBY are declining after an analyst at research company RetailMetrics LLC noted that, despite moderately encouraging same-store sales in June, retailers could face challenges through the remainder of the year. Rebate checks helped retailers this month, he notes, but they only provided a "one-time bump." He added that the back-to-school season is going to be challenging for retailers, which could be bad news for BBY.

Cassini's Primary Mission Ends, Two-Year Extension Begins

wooferhound points out recent news that the Cassini probe has completed its original four-year mission and is beginning a two-year extended mission, which was authorized earlier this year. Cassini's first mission brought us a treasure trove of information about Saturn and its various moons. The new mission will target two of those moons in particular for further study: Titan and Enceladus. Quoting: "The spacecraft is extremely healthy and carries 12 instruments powered by three radioisotope thermoelectric generators. Data from Cassini's nominal and extended missions could lay the groundwork for possible future missions to Saturn, Titan or Enceladus. [The two moons] are primary targets in the two-year extended mission, dubbed the Cassini Equinox Mission.

Ryan Block's last day as Engadget editor-in-chief ends with 1 year update on the state of Palm

Ryan Block is ending his role as editor-in-chief at Engadget to pursue a new gadget site opportunity with long-time buddy Peter Rojas and I wish them both the best of luck and look forward to seeing what they come up with. As a fitting end to his role at Engadget, Ryan posted an update to his open letter to Palm that he posted last year. His 2007 letter gave lots of unsolicited advice to Palm and CEO Ed Colligan even responded to the letter. The sad news is that one year later there is very little that shows Palm has changed much and it is tough to keep pulling for the company and hoping they come out of it.Looking through Ryan’s latest article, I have to agree with his comments on the new Treo Pro and you will see this in my review next week.

Lessons From One Year of Blogging

One year ago I launched this blog with a notion but no clue. The notion was that I wanted to make sense of the baffling, bad but somehow occasionally powerful stuff that was emerging under the aegis “Web 2.0.” [It has lately been usefully redubbed "social media"].
