Most Linux distributions, such as Ubuntu, are capable of installing directly to a USB drive as if it were just another hard drive, but some distributions treat USB flash drives as a slightly special case. DSL, for instance, has an installer specifically for creating a USB-drive installation of the OS. Puppy can also install itself directly to a flash drive through the built-in Universal Installer utility. However, the default options did not work in my case; I had to explicitly use the "SysLinux" option in its installer menu to make the flash drive bootable.

PCPro has a neat little tidbit about a new flash drive from Corsair. This little drive, only half the size of a lighter, packs a punch with 4GB of data storage and a very reasonable price tag (approx $32 USD). "When a Corsair rep turned up at Dennis Towers yesterday he told us he'd brought something pretty special to show off. We were therefore distinctly underwhelmed when he said it was...a flash drive. But this flash drive needs seeing to be believed. It's been passed all round the office, where it's invariably been greeted with ooohs and aaaahs of grinning appreciation."

Everyone's abuzz about HP's decision to ship Microsoft's Live Search toolbar beginning with 2009 HP computers. But this is more than just a win for Microsoft Live Search. It's just as big of a win for Silverlight, Microsoft's contender to take on Adobe and remake how web applications interact with users. The HP agreement is the largest and first deal I'm aware of to distribute any application written in Silverlight.

justechn writes "I recently had the opportunity to see, first hand, HP's new 30-bit, 1 billion color LCD display. I have to say I am impressed. Not only is the HP Dreamcolor LP2480zx capable of displaying so much more than standard LCDs, but it considered a Color Critical display. This means if you work with videos or photos you can be guaranteed that what you see is what it is suppose to look like. With 6 built-in color spaces (NTSC, SMPTE, sRGB, Rec. 709, Adobe RGB and DCI), you can easily switch to the one that best suits your applications and process. At $3499, it is too expensive to be a consumer level LCD, but compared to other Color Critical displays (which can cost as much as $15,000 and $25,000) this is a real bargain. This display was a joint venture between HP and DreamWorks animation.

Were this review based on design and features alone the HP 2133 Mini-Note PC would be walking away with a Recommended Award: that's a fact. It has a superb keyboard and a chassis that's a cut above both the Eee PC and anything we've seen, released or otherwise. Unfortunately for HP there's a lot more to it than this and the Mini-Note struggles to match even the modest exploits of the Eee PC. Its 1.2GHz VIA CPU chugs when shown any kind of video and battery life is poor, managing even less than the none too impressive longevity offered by Asus' machine. If and when HP updates this with something faster, be it Intel's Atom or a new generation VIA CPU, then it could be onto a real winner.

I was scared to death when I heard the loud shot-like noise that came from the DVD disk I was playing. Apparently the disk shattered inside the drive! The drive is wide open but it won’t close, and half the disc seems to be inside the drive somewhere. No other CD can go in at all. How do I take out the rest of the CD broken inside? Can someone please tell me how can I open the CD player inside the computer? I need to see inside so I can remove the rest of the disk. How did this thing happen? My computer is working fine. I mean I even turned it off and on again to see what could happen. Nothing. Can someone tell me if I should open the computer CPU case so I can remove the pieces? Thanks, Mary
