Yahoo, a major prize for Goliaths such as Google and Microsoft that wants to build a web empire with a major audience, sizable revenues, and good brand. By making a deal to Yahoo, Google gets a vastly bigger audience to go with its formidable resources. Google won’t be able to bid for Yahoo because of antitrust concerns. Yahoo has already surrendered some of its advertising space to search leader Google. The deal will allows running Google ads on yahoo search result pages. Google ad partnership with Yahoo could boost revenue and extend its online reach, making it the sole master of online advertising. Does Google deserve Yahoo? Google ad partnership with Yahoo would keep Yahoo out of Microsoft sight. Yahoo so desperate to stay away from Microsoft.

Yahoo! (Nasdaq:YHOO) and Rhapsody are putting the play buttons right in the search box and making the Web playable. Beginning today, users who search for an artist with available content on Yahoo! will be able to click play right in the Yahoo! shortcut at the top of the search results and instantly stream full-length songs by that artist through the FoxyTunes Player, which is powered by Rhapsody. The launch, part of the planned expansion of the Rhapsody service across Yahoo!, represents the continuation of Yahoo! Music's strategy to "play the Web" and furthers Yahoo!'s strategy to open its sites to feature content and services from across the Web.

You might not realize this, but Yahoo quietly launched a new way to provide search results last night. This new paradigm is called Yahoo! Glue, is currently in beta in the U.S., and is based on a similar program Yahoo! has already been experimenting with in India for the last few months. If you perform a search on Yahoo! you are not going to see anything different--Yahoo! Glue currently resides on its own standalone site at glue.yahoo.com, and you'll need to perform searches specifically from Yahoo! Glue if you want to see the new search results selections and layout.

If you launch Software Update, you'll likely notice that Apple has some Java updates for both Tiger and Leopard. On the Tiger side, Java for Mac OS X 10.4, Release 7 updates Java 2 Platform Standard Edition 5.0 (also known as Java 1.5—does Sun contract Microsoft for their product names?) and Java 1.4 to the latest versions. For Lepoard, Java for Mac OS X 10.5 Update 2 updates J2SE 5 and J2SE 1.4.2 to the latest versions. And if you are running a 64-bit capable Intel processor, you'll also get the latest version of Java SE 6.

HASP SRM v 3.50 adds automatic file wrapping for Java apps and enhanced security to Aladdin’s hardware- and software-based copy protection and licensing solution. The HASP SRM Java Envelope provides protection for Java Archive (JAR) files through strong encryption, protecting against reverse engineering at the class-level through the encryption of user-selected class files. A cross-platform environment based on intermediate code, Java is highly prone to reverse-engineering, making Envelope protection critical to securing intellectual property. Unlike other software DRM solutions, the HASP SRM Java Envelope does not require the conversion of Java files into another format in order to implement HASP SRM software- or hardware-based locking.

Linux Blog writes "The Google-Yahoo advertising deal has been rejected by the Department of Justice, and Google has pulled the plug on a search-ad partnership with Yahoo that would have given Yahoo major new revenue, but that raised antitrust concerns. Now, Yahoo has said the 'For Sale' sign is still on its front lawn and that Microsoft should buy the company. The internet portal's co-founder and CEO Jerry Yang made this comment despite the fact Yahoo rejected a $33 a share offer from Microsoft back in May. What a huge loss for the share holders. Microsoft was quick to respond that their buyout efforts were a thing of the past, but left the door open to a search partnership."

Dubbed the "hackathon", it was a chance for Yahoo to get it's name out there once again, and for those with dreams of becoming experts in the security field to try their hand at cracking Yahoo's various services. tdalek writes "You may remember the recent Slashdot article about Yahoo! Zimbra Desktop exposing authentication information. It turns out that more Yahoo! applications are affected, although to a lesser degree. With Yahoo!'s desktop program, it transmitted the usernames and passwords in plaintext. Yahoo! is one of the lucky few default e-mail providers on the iPhone; sadly it looks like Apple didn't insist on encryption from Yahoo! On the iPhone, authentication is encrypted, but you can see all the messages sent and received in plaintext. Incoming messages are downloaded in plaintext over the standard imap port. Outgoing mail is a bit harder to find, it is apparently sent by an HTTP post request wrapped up inside a bundle of XML, but security through obscurity isn't very effective.

It’s not all bad news for Yahoo (NSDQ: YHOO) these days. T-Mobile USA has picked the company’s OneSearch platform for its default search engine on mobile phones, InfoWorld reports. The carrier will be placing a OneSearch button on phones under a deal expected to be announced at the Open Mobile Summit in San Francisco later this week. It’s a notable win for Yahoo, particularly considering that T-Mobile just released the first Google-branded phone, the G1, last month. Yahoo didn’t say whether the OneSearch button would get any play on that device. Marco Boerries, EVP and head of Yahoo’s Connected Life Division, told InfoWorld that Yahoo let Google take away most of its market share in PC search and that it’s working diligently to make sure the same thing doesn’t happen in mobile.
