Students Sound Off About Java: related news

Java SE Runtime Environment 6 Update 10 Beta

Java Runtime Environment (JRE) enables your computer to run applications and applets that use Java technology. Java technology allows you to work and play in a secure computing environment. Java technology is in cell phones, automobiles, the Mars Rover, and many other places. By downloading it to your computer, you will be able to experience the power of Java software. The Java Virtual Machine is only one aspect of Java software that is involved in web interaction. The Java Virtual Machine is built right into your Java software download, and helps the Sun JRE run Java applications.

Students Sound Off About Java

What do future generations think about the state of Java and its relevance to their research? The answer may surprise you, and Sun.

Java Champion Adam Bien on the Latest Technologies

Java Champion Adam Bien has an extended history with both the Java SE and Java EE technologies, having worked with both since their inception with JDK 1.0 and Java Web Server, as Janice J. Heiss reports. At the outset of the interview, Bien identified three fallacies associated with the Java EE platform: the belief that J2EE is complex; the belief that Java EE 5 is easy; and the belief that distributed programming could be simpler. Instead, he maintains, the process of building J2EE applications is labor intensive and can be boring but not exactly complex. He offered code samples of the operations necessary to deploy the server-side component HelloBean. With Java EE 5 the process is somewhat simpler.

Sun to Fully Open Source Java

Dionysius, God of Wine and Leaf brings news that Sun Microsystems will be removing the last restrictions on Java to make it completely open source. Sun wants Java to be easily available for use in Linux distributions. We've discussed the steps Sun has taken to open-source Java over the past couple years. From Yahoo! News: "'We've been engaging with the open-source community for Java to finish off the OpenJDK project, and the specific thing that we've been working on with them is clearing the last bits that we didn't have the rights,' to distribute, Sands said. 'Over the past year, we have pretty much removed most of those encumbrances.' Work still needs to be done to offer the Java sound engine and SNMP code via open source; that effort is expected to be completed this year.

Students get hands on Nanotechnology experience

Getting students excited about the expanding field of nanotechnology -- That's what educators were hoping to accomplish at Community Day at the UAlbany NanoCollege. [profile] Parents and children got an up close look of presentations and took part in interactive demonstrations. School officials said nanotech is creating breakthroughs in health care, energy, electronics, the economy and the environment. "It's basically about getting younger people to think about school. To get more excited about science and engineering. The types of jobs they could continue on with like what their grandparents did. So fundamentally learn more about science," said Dr. Edward Cupoli, who is a professor at the UAlbany NanoCollege.

Sun to Create Java VM for iPhone

Sun Microsystems is developing a Java Virtual Machine for Apple's iPhone and plans to release the JVM some time after June, enabling Java applications to run on the popular mobile device. According to Eric Klein, vice president of Java marketing at Sun, the JVM is to be based on the Java Micro Edition (ME) version of Java. Although Apple had not shown interest in enabling Java to run on the iPhone, Sun plans to step in and do the job itself after having pondered Thursday's release of an SDK for the iPhone by Apple.

Endeavour crew tell Japanese students about space mission

Crew members of the U.S. space shuttle Endeavour including Japanese astronaut Takao Doi met Japanese junior and senior high school students on Tuesday, telling them about their mission in March to deliver the first of three sections of Japan’s Kibo space laboratory. The event was held at the U.S. Embassy in Tokyo to provide the Japanese students with an opportunity to learn about the manned space mission at the International Space Station and to answer their questions.

Java 6 Released for 64bit Intel Macs

IconBack in 2007 when Apple released Mac OS X 10.5 Leopard, a much-heard criticism was the lack of support for Java 6. Leopard shipped with an older version of Java, 1.5, even though 1.6 had been released by Sun almost a year prior. Sun had already released Java 1.6 for Linux and Windows, but did not do so for Mac OS X, since Apple insists on developing their own version of Java, according to Sun. Now, 6 months later, Mac Java programmers can rejoice.

Apple adds Java SE 6 support to Leopard with new update

When it comes to Java 6, Apple's hasn't exactly been quick to add it to Mac OS X. In fact, Java 6 was released in December 2006, but wasn't added to Tiger or Leopard in 2007. Sure, Apple did release a Developer Preview of the Java 6 JDK, but that wasn't an official consumer release. Apple has finally gotten around to adding Java 6 to Leopard, though, and has released the new Java for Mac OS X 10.5 Update 1 with the new version.

Poll: Do you like sound that starts automatically?
