Server load balancing architectures, Part 1: Transport-level load balancing

Server farms achieve high scalability and high availability through server load balancing, a technique that makes the server farm appear to clients as a single server. In this two-part article, Gregor Roth explores server load balancing architectures, with a focus on open source solutions. Part 1 covers server load balancing basics and discusses the pros and cons of transport-level server load balancing. Part 2 covers application-level server load balancing architectures, which address some of the limitations of the architectures discussed in Part 1.

Sun Serves Up Some Java EE 6 in GlassFish

The next big thing for enterprise Java isn't quite ready yet, but that's not stopping Sun Microsystems from rolling out an app server release that shows off some early Java EE 6 features. Sun's GlassFish Enterprise Server V3 Prelude is a modular Java application server that is targeted at the web tier of applications. The new Glassfish release could help push the envelope for Java EE 6, which isn't expected to be formally completed until spring of 2009.

Sun Java System Web Proxy Server

Sun Java System Web Proxy Server solves the problems of network congestion and slow response time while providing control over network resources without burdening users or network administrators. The new Java ES v5.0 (which includes this Web Proxy Server) enables enterprises to consolidate IT infrastructures. The following enhancements have been made in recent releases of Proxy Server:

weblogic server:java.sql.SQLException: Io exception: Broken pipe

I got this exception in the production twice in the same week and created a huge log file with the exception stack trace until the space available. As a result the production server went down.I was unable to start the production server due to lack of space on the mounted disks. I have deleted very old log files for making some free space and then able to start the production application server and run. I am using connection pooling to connect with Oracle 9i from weblogic 9.2 server. I am willing to know the root cause for this issue.I thought of simulating this issue by restarting the oracle database when the application server(weblogic) is still up and running with the old connection pools. But couldn't simulate the issue again?

Java and Mac envelopes

HASP SRM v 3.50 adds automatic file wrapping for Java apps and enhanced security to Aladdin’s hardware- and software-based copy protection and licensing solution. The HASP SRM Java Envelope provides protection for Java Archive (JAR) files through strong encryption, protecting against reverse engineering at the class-level through the encryption of user-selected class files. A cross-platform environment based on intermediate code, Java is highly prone to reverse-engineering, making Envelope protection critical to securing intellectual property. Unlike other software DRM solutions, the HASP SRM Java Envelope does not require the conversion of Java files into another format in order to implement HASP SRM software- or hardware-based locking.

VMware Server 2 shows some improvement

In the early days of desktop virtualization, there were few low-priced alternatives to VMware Workstation that didn't involve a steep learning curve. Even the freely available VirtualBox didn't affect Workstation's market domination and instead faced competition from the newly rebranded VMware GSX server, which was offered for free as VMware Server. Despite being an entry-level server virtualization product, many people used VMware Server on the desktop. Taking that into consideration, you have to look at the recently released VMware Server 2, from two angles -- as an entry-level server virtualization platform and as an alternative to desktop virtualization products like VirtualBox. With its performance and other improvements, it does enough to keep existing customers happy, but probably not enough to get others to switch.

Blu-ray Disc Application Development with Java ME,

This is a great time to be Java developer. According to the latest statistics provided at the JavaOne 2008 conference, there are over 6 billion Java-enabled devices deployed worldwide. These devices can range from large-scale enterprise class servers down to a tiny smart card that fits in your wallet. Java technology is embedded into billions of phones, as well as countless other devices including the traditional desktop computer. Java technology is a critical part of the new high-definition video standard, the Blu-ray Disc standard. In this two-part series, we're going to cover several aspects of using the Java language to create applications for your Blu-ray disc player, which includes the very popular PlayStation 3 gaming console. Some various Java Platforms that exist today are:

Apple Bans iPhone App For Competing With Mail.app

recoiledsnake writes "Another submission has been rejected from the iPhone App Store, this time for 'duplicating the functionality of the iPhone Mail application.' The author claims that his application allows the user to log into their multiple web email accounts and that Apple seems to be confusing Gmail and Mail.app. This comes on the heels of Apple rejecting an application for competing with iTunes and rejecting other silly but harmless apps as being of 'limited utility.'" ComputerWorld has an update to the rejected Podcaster app mentioned above. It seems the developer has used Apple's "Ad Hoc" service to begin distributing the software despite the fact that they blocked it from the App Store.

Java Release 7 for Mac OS X 10.4 improves reliability

Apple today released a Java update for Mac OS X 10.4. The short description claims improved reliability and compatibility with Java 2 Platform Standard Edition 5.0 and Java 1.4 on OS X 10.4.11 and later. An error checking issue has been fixed, now preventing malicious websites from executing arbitrary code. Another security enhancement prevents untrusted Java applets from obtaining higher privileges, also preventing them from executing arbitrary code. Java for Mac OS X 10.4 Release 7 is available as a free download from Apple.
