Java 6 Released for 64bit Intel Macs: related news

Java 6 Released for 64bit Intel Macs

IconBack in 2007 when Apple released Mac OS X 10.5 Leopard, a much-heard criticism was the lack of support for Java 6. Leopard shipped with an older version of Java, 1.5, even though 1.6 had been released by Sun almost a year prior. Sun had already released Java 1.6 for Linux and Windows, but did not do so for Mac OS X, since Apple insists on developing their own version of Java, according to Sun. Now, 6 months later, Mac Java programmers can rejoice.

Java SE Runtime Environment 6 Update 10 Beta

Java Runtime Environment (JRE) enables your computer to run applications and applets that use Java technology. Java technology allows you to work and play in a secure computing environment. Java technology is in cell phones, automobiles, the Mars Rover, and many other places. By downloading it to your computer, you will be able to experience the power of Java software. The Java Virtual Machine is only one aspect of Java software that is involved in web interaction. The Java Virtual Machine is built right into your Java software download, and helps the Sun JRE run Java applications.

Does an Open Java Really Matter?

snydeq writes "Fatal Exception's Neil McAllister questions the relevance of the recent opening of Java given the wealth of options open source developers enjoy today. Sure, as the first full-blooded Java implementation available under a 100 percent Free Software license, RedHat's IcedTea pushes aside open source objections to developing in Java. Yet, McAllister asks, if Java really were released today, brand-new, would it be a tool you'd choose? 'The problem, as I see it, is twofold,' he writes. 'First, as the Java platform has matured, it has become incredibly complex. Today it's possible to do anything with Java, but no one developer can do everything — there simply aren't enough hours in the day to learn it all. Second, and most important, even as Java has stretched outward to embrace more concepts and technologies — adding APIs an

Apple adds Java SE 6 support to Leopard with new update

When it comes to Java 6, Apple's hasn't exactly been quick to add it to Mac OS X. In fact, Java 6 was released in December 2006, but wasn't added to Tiger or Leopard in 2007. Sure, Apple did release a Developer Preview of the Java 6 JDK, but that wasn't an official consumer release. Apple has finally gotten around to adding Java 6 to Leopard, though, and has released the new Java for Mac OS X 10.5 Update 1 with the new version.

Apple Finally Adds Java SE6 for Leopard

java.jpgWhen OS X Leopard was released Mac-loving Java fans were somewhat annoyed to find that Java 6 wasn't included, making it difficult to develop Java apps on your PowerBook. Well, if you weren't happy with the "SoyLatte" release we mentioned at the time, Apple has an official solution for you — Java SE6 for Mac OS X.

Java is finally Free and Open

This week the IcedTea Project reached an important milestone - The latest OpenJDK binary included in Fedora 9 (x86 and x86_64) passes the rigorous Java Test Compatibility Kit (TCK). This means that it provides all the required Java APIs and behaves like any other Java SE 6 implementation - in keeping with the portability goal of the Java platform. As of writing, Fedora 9 is the only operating system to include a free and open Java SE 6 implementation that has passed the Java TCK. All of the code that makes this possible has been made available to the IcedTea project so everyone can benefit from the work.

IcedTea's OpenJDK Passes Java Test Compatibility Kit

emyar writes "At JavaOne in May, 2006, Sun Microsystems announced they were going to release Java as free software under the terms of the GPL. The size of the task (6.5 million lines of code) was only eclipsed by the size of the opportunity for Java as a free and open technology. Intel launches new CPUs, chipsets at Computex 2008

It wouldn't be Computex without an Intel chipset launch. With today's arrival of Computex 2008, Intel has officially unveiled their 4-series of chipsets for desktop PCs. The 4-series launch consists of the G45, G43, P45, and P43 chipsets. The most significant addition in the new G45 chipset is without a doubt Intel's Graphics Media Accelerator X4500HD. The new IGP boasts full support for DirectX 10 and Shader Model 4.0, although OpenGL 2.0 support won't be added until a driver update is provided sometime in Q3'08. As the "HD" in GMA X4500HD suggests, Intel is really highlighting video performance with the new IGP. The chip supports full hardware acceleration for MPEG2, AVC, and VC-1 decoding, ensuring smooth Blu-ray playback. G45 is also the first Intel chipset to support post-processing algorithms for HD playback, and supports HDMI/DVI w
