Review: iPhone and iPod case roundup -- exercise edition

The iPod shuffle and iPod nano are the obvious choices when picking an iPod for sporty recreation -- they're both solid-state and incredibly tiny. But do those of us who have only a larger, heavier iPod, such as the classic or iPhone, opt out of physical activity, contently sitting on the couch accumulating calories while our smaller-player brethren hone their athletic skills and strengthen their cardiovascular systems? No, I say; that's why companies make sport-targeted armband cases for all iPod models. Here, I look at two of these cases -- one for the iPod classic, and one for the iPhone.

Japan Considers Fair-Use Clause Based on U.S. Copyright Law

The Japanese government's group in charge of copyright reform is proposing the addition of fair-use clauses similar to those found in the United States Copyright Law. The current Japanese Copyright Law requires permission from the copyright holders for any kind of copying or use, except for personal, library, or academic purposes. Prime Minister Yasuo Fukuda's Intellectual Property Strategy Headquarters proposes to expand these exceptions by considering other factors, including whether the copying or use is intended for non-commercial purposes and whether they influence the market or value of the original work.

CCC Conference Examines Copyright Issues From Four Distinct Angles

Copyright Clearance Center hosted its first-ever copyright conference at the Union League Club in New York City last Thursday. OnCopyright 2008 was an engaging, cerebral affair that featured four long panel discussions, each of which examined copyright issues from a different perspective, including technology, society, law, and the arts. Copyright Clearance Center (CCC) President and CEO Tracey Armstrong noted that, while her organization has been providing licensing and permissions services to businesses, publishers, academic institutions, and authors for 30 years, it has rarely insinuated itself into the public discourse about copyright policies and practices. Thursday’s conference provided CCC a unique opportunity to "open minds" through a more evolved discussion, according to Armstrong.

Build your own iPod stereo system

iPod owners have an embarrassment of riches when it comes to choosing a speaker system for their music player. I should know—over the past few years, I’ve reviewed many of these accessories, which typically combine an iPod dock, an amplifier, speakers, and a remote control. And while many iPod speaker systems make considerable compromises between sound quality, size, and convenience, some are quite impressive. When I’ve reviewed the best of these products—take Klipsch’s $400 iFi or Jamo’s $400 i300 as examples—I've often noted that users would be hard-pressed to put together a system on their own that sounds better for the same amount of money.

iPod touch 16GB

After spending a couple of months with the iPhone, it's hard to pick up the iPod touch and not think about what could have been. If only video looked as good on the touch as it does on the iPhone. If only Apple had compromised on the iPod's sleek lines to add a couple of unobtrusive volume buttons (or offered a headset that included remote controls). If only the whole iPod-as-PIM-concept had been thought through to the point where both contacts and calendar events could be entered on the iPod. If only I could use my old video accessories with my new iPod.
