JagsLive writes "China is running out of IP addresses unless it makes the switch to IPv6. According to the China Internet Network Information Center, under the current allocation speed, China's IPv4 address resources can only meet the demand of 830 more days and if no proper measures are taken by then, new Chinese netizens will not be able to gain normal access to the Internet. Li Kai, director in charge of the IP business for CNNIC's international department, says that if a netizen wants to get access to the Internet, an IP address will be necessary to analyze the domain name and view the pages. At present, most of the networks in China use IPv4 addresses. As a basic resource for the Internet, the IPv4 addresses are limited and 80% of the final allocation IP addresses have been used.

There are so many different Web titles, it's amazing. I've seen everything from: Webmaster, Webmistress, Web Producer, Web Designer, Web Developer, Web Architect, Web Programmer, and many more. What is your Web job title? I have been a Web Setter, a Web Manager, and a Web Writer, as well as several of the titles listed above. Right now I call myself a Web Developer, Web Designer, or Web Writer, but that could change.

Connecting regularly to the Internet to read the latest news or check emails, few people think how this all functions. And hardly could they imagine that in a couple of years they won’t be able to access their favourite web sites. The "father of the internet" Vint Cerf has warned that the web will run out of IP (internet protocol) addresses by 2010.

We've covered the long history of Australian politicians looking to set up their own censored internet "to protect the children" (of course). The plans have changed over time, but the end goal has always been the same: to force ISPs to block a list of sites provided by the government. In the latest incarnation, the plan supposedly included an "opt-out" option, where a web surfer could specifically ask to opt-out of the filters (effectively asking someone to sign up for a "porn-surfing license"). That, on its own, might scare some people off, but now it turns out that the opt-out isn't really an opt-out. Instead, it's just opting you in to a somewhat less restrictive blacklist. Once again, this idea of mandatory filtering out of "bad" sites on the internet sets a dangerous precedent.

An anonymous reader writes "The most comprehensive scan of the entire internet for several decades shows that millions of allocated addresses simply aren't being used. Professor John Heidemann from the University of Southern California (USC) used ICMP and TCP to scan the internet. Even though the last IPv4 addresses will be handed out in a couple of years, his survey reveals that many of the addresses allocated to big companies and institutions are lying idle. Heidemann says: 'People are very concerned that the IPv4 address space is very close to being exhausted. Our data suggests that maybe there are better things we should be doing in managing the IPv4 address space.' So, is it time to reclaim those unused addresses before the IPv6 crunch?"

Hugh Pickens writes "The Guardian has an interesting story on Vint Cerf, the 'father of the internet,' in which he says there's no silver bullet for scammers, spammers and criminals running zombie networks and porn-to-porn file swapping because 'the internet was designed that way.' Cerf adds, 'Like every medium, the internet can be abused. When we think about it, we can commit fraud locally and internationally using the telephone system and postal service.' However, Cerf is also convinced that it's the internet's openness — in allowing people with new ideas to do their thing without getting anyone's permission — that is the main source of its power, and he is against the idea of a two-tier internet with a trusted, controlled 'overnet' for commercial and business use, and an 'undernet' where anything goes.

Opera Software on Wednesday revealed a search engine that indexes structural information about Web pages so Web developers and standards bodies can see what technologies are being used to build Web sites and how they are being used. The Metadata Analysis and Mining Application search engine -- "MAMA" for short -- is being tested by the company and should be released in an invitation-only beta by the end of the year, said Snorre Grimsby, vice president of quality assurance at Opera in Oslo, Norway. MAMA grew out of tests Opera routinely does to make sure its own browser software products work well with existing Web pages that use the most commonly used Web site-creation technology, he said. "We realized internally that we needed to be able to find lots of live sites out there that used certain technologies in certain combinations so we cou

When it comes to emerging markets, there’s been a lot of talk of how the mobile web will be the dominant way that people access the internet. Now there’s evidence from Opera Software (OSL: OPERA), the browser makers, who in its October “State of the Mobile Web” report, found that the mobile web is replacing the wired web in Southeast Asia. Looking at data and metrics from its mobile browser Opera Mini, the company found that page views per user in Indonesia and the Philippines are significantly higher than the worldwide numbers. Page views in the Philippines alone grew more than 1120 percent this year. In Indonesia, each user browsed 358 pages on average in October 2008, “well above the global average”.

On September 2, the 800-pound gorilla of the internet made yet another inroad into the somewhat crowded market for alternative web browsers. The Chrome web browser is Google's latest toy: blazingly fast, user-friendly, and with the raison d'ętre of improving life for users of “web applications”. More of the important work we do on the computer now occurs through "web application” sites, with all our data sitting on a distant (almost always American) web server and not on our own computers. Webmail services such as Gmail and Microsoft's Windows Live Mail (formerly Hotmail) are the tip of the iceberg, and the most popular implementation of this technology; web word-processing and spreadsheet creation via mainly the Google Docs suite is gaining momentum as a quick way to create and share documents with whole offices or the internet at large.

ddelmonte writes "This Washington Post article examines a test conducted at UCLA. The test had two groups, young people who used the Internet, and older people who had never been online. Both groups were asked to do Internet searches and book reading tasks while their brain activity was monitored. "We found that in reading the book task, the visual cortex — the part of the brain that controls reading and language — was activated," Small said. "In doing the Internet search task, there was much greater activity, but only in the Internet-savvy group." He said it appears that people who are familiar with the Internet can engage in a much deeper level of brain activity. "There is something about Internet searching where we can gauge it to a level that we find challenging," Small said.
