Derby inspires Turner artists

The Turner prize-nominated artists Jane and Louise Wilson have created a large-scale installation to mark the opening of Derby's new arts centre, the Quad Gallery, this summer. A huge cube structure covered in mirrors and screens, the installation will show films made during the artists' year-long research period into life in the local area, among them a film about a local centre for Bosnian refugees. The artists have also been seeking inspiration for the installation in local industries, working with clock manufacturers Smiths, train engineers Bombardier, and Rolls Royce. "Derby is traditionally a site for migrants," Louise Wilson said, "and its businesses have created some interesting diaspora. We are looking at the ideas of regeneration and local industry.

The area given to Small Press has not changed. With regard to Artists Alley this year we are able to accommodate 210 artists, up 43 artists from last year when we had 167 spaces. And I should point out that the 167 was up 20 people from the year previous where we accommodated 147. And I will state emphatically that no publisher, or any exhibitor, for that matter, has been asked to reduce their booth size to make way for Hollywood. Or any other exhibitor. Each year the floor changes in configuration. Some exhibitors hope to expand their space, some exhibitors reduce their space and still others elect not to return for any number of reasons. This is true this year as well. When additional space becomes available, we try to accommodate requests of long time exhibitors while still keeping the floor dynamic by welcoming new exhibitors.

Art works Auctioned online

June 18th and 19th Saffronart features an online auction covering 140 works by 67 modern and contemporary Indian artists. These will be accompanied by preview events in New York and Mumbai. This is one of those rare occurrences in the Indian art world, when both modern and contemporary artists are being showcased in the same market to the world at large. "Essentially both these styles of art have traditionally different buyers in the market. The European and non-Indian buyers seem to identify more with contemporary Indian artists, and hence their demand is currently more in the west. The Indian resident and non-residential buyers have a greater connect and nostalgic feeling toward Indian modernists. Thus the works of artists like Souza, Raza, and Hussain amongst others fetch such high values.

Bridging the Gap Between Art and Code In Games

Gamasutra posted an article written by Jason Hayes, a developer for Volition Inc., which is known for its production of the Saint's Row, FreeSpace, and Red Faction series. Hayes discusses the division between graphical artists and coders, who often clash because their aims are so disparate and their areas of expertise do not necessarily overlap. It has caused some companies, such as Volition, to develop an intermediary "technical artist" to find a balance between the two. "Integrating technical artists into a studio frees up the programmers from being solely responsible for the development and maintenance of the game's tools and pipelines. While programmers still have a hand in the design (and sometimes implementation) of those tools and pipelines, the technical artist is the driving force behind them and is looking out for the best inter

Artists are not above mores

THERE was a time in history when artists ("The rise of the art police”, Inquirer 12-13/7) were anonymous workers on group projects. It was the Romantic movement that elevated artists to the role of individual geniuses whose arcane gifts of perception, sensibility and sensitivity render them impervious to criticism by lesser mortals.
