Under the Copyrights Act 1957 copyright societies are authorised to grant licences for copyrighted works. No other person except the owner of the work or a copyright society can grant a licence. A copyright society has the task of collective management of the rights of the owners and furthers their interests to prevent infringement of their works, in India as well as abroad. As India is a member of international conventions, the copyright societies in India can have reciprocal arrangements with organisations in other countries for collection of royalties for use of Indian works in these countries. Again, the owners have to withdraw the licence bestowed on the copyright society without prejudice to the rights of the society. In India, copyright societies like IPRS, PPL, SCRIPT have been protecting and managing the rights of the owners for

An anonymous reader writes "It is now compulsory for people selected for a full body scan to take part, or they will not be allowed to fly from Heathrow or Manchester airports. There is no optional pat down. Also, a rule which meant that people under 18 were not allowed to participate in the body scanner trial has been overturned by the government. There is no mention of blurring out the genitals, however reports a few years back said X-ray backscatter devices aren't effective unless the genitals of people going through them are visible."

Whereas Dvorak’s Seventh gets a good press from the pundits, there’s something about the Eighth that irritates them into finding supposed shortcomings. Yet, listening to both together, I’m forced to conclude that it’s the pundits’ assumptions that need rethinking, not the composer’s invention. No 8 is certainly different from the rather Brahmsian No 7, but no less cogent in its more experimental way. It carries all before it in a good performance, which it gets here from that master of Czech music, Charles Mackerras — 82 when these live recordings were made, and in spanking form. The woodwinds’ birdsong in No 8 is a special pleasure. A slight slip in the cellos at the variation theme’s return in the finale is a tiny price to pay for the vitality of the Philharmonia’s playing.

Ugh. So, we recently wrote about Matthew Yglesias' quite accurate economic explanation for why the price of music was going to get pushed to zero, no matter what the industry said or what happened with copyright law. Andrew Sullivan spotted it, and also a response from a guy named Sonny Bunch who apparently has decided to totally reinterpret the history of copyright law in a post he entitled Piracy. Is. Stealing.:

Kijori writes "Lord Lucas, a member of the UK House of Lords, has accused record companies of blackmailing internet users by accusing people of copyright infringement who have no way to defend themselves. 'You can get away with asking for 500 or 1,000 and be paid on most occasions without any effort having to be made to really establish guilt. It is straightforward legal blackmail.' The issue is that there is no way for people to prove their innocence, since the record company's data is held to be conclusive proof, and home networking equipment does not log who is downloading what. Hopefully, at the very least, the fact that parliament has realised this fact will mean that copyright laws will get a little more sane."

Future Publishing sent us the first issue of the quarterly publication, and one thing is immediately obvious: the company is doing many things right.

It's no secret that tons of people are pretty damn upset with NBC's decisions to tape delay pretty much everything at the Olympics, in an era when everyone is used to real-time info. On top of that, most people recognize that it's not hard to simply go online to unauthorized sources to watch streams of the Olympics live. GigaOm's NewTeeVee put up a post over the weekend that explains how to view such unauthorized streams, and the site even titled the post: "Pirating the 2010 Winter Olympics." Given that this is all rather obvious, it shouldn't be a problem, right? But, thanks to some screwed up court decisions that have forced secondary liability into copyright law, using an "inducemen...

Throughout the world there are people sitting right at this moment, scratching their heads and wondering "Should I use Twitter?". Every day people ponder over joining up with Twitter; yet each day people stop using Twitter as well. There is a never ending revolving door of people joining and then leaving (or at least leaving their accounts dormant). Importantly, though, there is a real pressure for business owners to join. And that in itself could be a problem.

With various companies around the world making a nice profit by threatening people with "pre-settlement" cash demands to avoid a copyright lawsuit, it was only a matter of time until others got in on the action, even if they didn't hold the copyrights at all. Slashdot points us to the news of a University of Georgia help desk employee who has been arrested for trying to shake down a student with a copyright infringement claim. Apparently, he accused at least one student of copyright infringement, and demanded money to "clear her name." Police are now trying to find out if the guy did this to others as well. Of course, you have to wonder if he got the idea from seeing companies that are doing this on a larger scale.

As you may or may not have heard, the USTR has been accepting public comments for its Special 301 report, which comes out every year in an attempt to name and shame countries that the USTR does not believe does enough to protect US copyrights abroad. Typically, this process is driven very much by the entertainment industry, to the extent that even people in the US copyright office have been known to roll their eyes about the legitimacy of the report. A lot of people have been incorrectly claiming that these comments are about ACTA, but they're not. The Special 301 report basically just tries to determine which countries the US should put more pressure on to "get with the program," diplomatically speaking, when it comes to copyright issues. In the past, it's been used to bully countries like Canada and Israel -- both of which have strong c
