Mindspeed Sells Patents

Newport Beach-based Mindspeed Technologies announced today that it has sold what it describes as "certain non-core patents" for $10M. Terms and buyers of the patents were not disclosed. Mindspeed said the patents came from a broad portfolio of patents which are no longer core to the firm's business focus. Details on the types of patents sold and number of patents was not released by the company. Mindspeed said it has been generating revenue from patent sales in the last year, and expects to engage in additional "strategic, non-core" patent sale or licensing arrangements in the future.

Google Finance to add more data to fight Yahoo, AOL

Google plans to expand its finance Web site by adding more historical data and company filings as it tries to gain ground on more-popular services from Yahoo and AOL. The company will also seek to improve its 2-year-old finance site by offering real-time stock prices from the New York Stock Exchange on a permanent basis after a four-month pilot started this week, said R.J. Pittman, director of product management. Google's finance pages had 2.07 million U.S. visitors last month, ranking 13th on researcher ComScore's list of top financial sites. Patents facilitation centre opened

The Pharmaceuticals Export Promotion Council (Pharmexcil) announced the inauguration of a Patents Facilitation Centre here on Friday. Apart from Hyderabad, the centres are also being set up in Mumbai and Delhi with the support of the Department of Chemicals & Petrochemicals. These centres are expected to come up in the next two years. The Hyderabad centre was inaugurated by Mr V.S. Sampath, Secretary, Department of Chemicals and Petrochemicals, Government of India. The se Intellectual Property Rights (IPRs) and Patents Facilitation Centres are expected to provide small and medium pharmaceutical manufacturers and exporters the information and knowledge on patents, status of patents of pharmaceutical products compared with other countries. Apple says iTunes has sold more than 5 billion songs

Apple, maker of the iPod media player, said its iTunes online store has sold more than 5 billion songs since its debut five years ago as more fans abandon record shops for the Web. The site is the most popular in the United States for legal music downloads, with more than 8 million songs. ITunes customers also are renting or buying more than 50,000 movies a day, Apple said Thursday in a statement. Sales of CDs and music DVDs fell 13 percent to $15.9 billion last year, the International Federation of the Phonographic Industry said yesterday. Sales of downloaded songs and mobile-phone ring tones rose 34 percent to $2.9 billion.

Nokia and Qualcomm Come to Terms Over Patents

Nokia and Qualcomm emerged from a Delaware court yesterday with a new, 15-year cross licensing agreement in place. They were set to battle over the use of certain wireless patents, and instead were able to come to terms over patents covering GSM, EDGE, CDMA, WCDMA, HSDPA, OFDM, WiMax, LTE and other technologies. Under the terms of the new agreement, Nokia may use Qualcomm's patents in its chipsets and network infrastructure equipment, and Qualcomm may use certain Nokia technologies in its chips. Qualcomm also won the right to call several disputed WCDMA, GSM, and OFDMA patents its own. Nokia will make an upfront payment to Qualcomm and pay ongoing royalties, but the exact financial details were not disclosed.
