HOUSTON, July 9 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- A new white paper by IDC released today at the Microsoft Worldwide Partner Conference 2008 highlights the collateral damage that software piracy is causing to companies across the technology industry. Sponsored by Microsoft Corp. and the International Association of Microsoft Certified Partners (IAMCP), the white paper shows that every dollar Microsoft loses to software piracy translates to $5.50 in lost opportunity for other companies in the partner ecosystem. The white paper points to a stark reality not often highlighted in industry discussions: Software piracy is a wide-ranging problem that deeply affects small companies as well as large software vendors.

Ian Lamont writes "The Business Software Alliance has just released its state piracy study (full PDF also available). The BSA says that one in five pieces of software in use in the United States is unlicensed, and notes that piracy rates are highest in Ohio (27%). However, as noted by the Industry Standard, there are problems with the state study, and the way the BSA is presenting the data: the study only includes eight states, and it is making some questionable connections, including the claim that lost state and local tax revenue from piracy would have been enough to 'hire nearly 25,000 experienced police officers.'"

Each dollar lost to software piracy equals $5.50 in lost opportunities, claims Microsoft. A new white paper released by IDC and funded by the software giant looks at how copyright infringement affects the software ecosystem as a whole, not just how it affects a single corporation. IDC claims that, if Microsoft were to make back each of those lost dollars, partner companies would gain $4.37 in increased revenues and $1.13 in lower operational costs. That's assuming, however, that the Business Software Alliance's estimated losses due to piracy are correct—an assumption that IDC makes in this report, despite having admitted in the past that the numbers are misleading.

"The main surprise in the first set of tests, on RAID-5 performance, is that block input is substantially better for software RAID; ext3 got 385MB/sec in software against 330MB/sec in hardware. The hardware dominates in block output, getting 322MB/sec aginst the 174MB/sec achieved by software for aligned XFS, making for a 185% speed increase for hardware over software. These differences in block output are not as large when using the ext3 filesystem. Block rewrite is almost identical for ext3 in software and hardware, whereas the rewrite difference becomes 128MB/sec to 109MB/sec for hardware to software respectively when using XFS."

In the past few months a certain home ad has appeared in CHIP that encourages one to “Always buy original”. The statement “software piracy is rampant in India” is cliché. I’d go a step further to say, that, apart from the operating system (which has self-validating mechanisms), most applications on an average PC are either pirated, open source, freeware, or trialware on extended use. At this point I have to ask, “When was the last time you paid for software?” And I won’t be surprised if someone shoots back, “Why should I pay for software when it’s so easily available?”
