Even though Rogers' rate plans for iPhone generally angered Canadians, it appears its meager efforts to placate users with a $30 promotional 6GB data plan was enough for "tens of thousands" of Canadian iPhone buyers. According to a Reuters report, Rogers says that it sold out of iPhone stock in most cities, and that the iPhone 3G launch was the "best weekend of handset sales in Rogers' history."

Rogers' iPhone pricing spawns online protest

Canadian iPhone fans have launched an online petition protesting against pricing plans that Rogers Wireless Inc. will offer customers when the coveted touch-screen device arrives in Canada on July 11. So far, the website claims that more than 20,000 people have added their names or handles to the online petition at ruinediphone.com since it was launched Friday. The creators say they plan to send a hard copy of all the comments posted on the site to parent Rogers Communications Inc.'s headquarters in Toronto to demonstrate users' "indignation." Although there have been a few complaints regarding Rogers' pricing plans, most of the calls the company has received about the iPhone have come from customers wanting to know when it will be available and where they can buy it, Rogers spokeswoman Liz Hamilton said.

A new support document explains how to replace an original iPhone with an iPhone 3G using the same carrier: "If you follow these steps to backup your original iPhone first, and then restore the backup to your iPhone 3G, your saved SMS messages, email accounts, photos, notes, and other personal settings will be present on your iPhone 3G," the company noted. Rogers defends iPhone data: 'better than some'...

Rogers Wireless is justified in its limited data plans as many other iPhone-carrying nations are doing the same or are more restrictive, a company spokeswoman tells Electronista. The Canadian company argues that a "majority" of international iPhone carriers have capped data and believes its plan to be better than these, citing as example Orange France plans that include a 500MB 'reasonable use' limit versus the 2GB maximum on Rogers' best iPhone plan. The company also tries to justify the caps by claiming that unlimited use would require customers pay for more than they need.

"IPhone 3G had a stunning opening weekend," Apple chief executive officer Steve Jobs said in a statement. Apple also announced that more than 10 million applications were downloaded through the company's new App Store, which sells programs and games designed to work on the next-generation iPhone. Updated: Apple Will Not Sell iPhone 3G In Its Canadian Stores In Protest Of High Service Fees

This isn’t exactly the biggest protest that Apple (NSDQ: AAPL) could have waged against Rogers Wireless, but it’s getting a ton of attention. Reports today are claiming that the iPhone-maker will refuse to sell the new 3G version of the phone in Apple retail stores on Friday because it is protesting the higher-than-average service plans for the device that Rogers intends to charge. AppleInsider.com reports that “Apple, disgusted with Rogers Wireless for dumping egregious service plans on would-be iPhone 3G buyers, has decided that its Canadian retail stores will have no part in helping the carrier market the new handset to customers.” AppleInsider said it got this information during a late phone call with Apple last night; representatives from Rogers have not yet responded to emails seeking comment.
