Review: UK Palm Treo 500 with Windows Mobile 6 Standard

The Palm Treo 500v is the entry level model from Palm that gives new visitors to the world of Windows Mobile the opportunity to live the all-round play and work experience without having to fork out on an expensive bells and whistles handset. The Palm website safely pegs this device as the Windows Mobile equivalent of the newly released Centro. It is aimed at grabbing a share of the demographic looking to move to away from simpler phones in favour of a more PDA / phone hybrid. So is the Treo worthy of standing on the same podium as its million plus selling little brother? Read the review to find out!

Upcoming Windows Mobile Palm Rumor Analysis

The second half of 2008 has long been considered a very uncertain period of transition for Palm. The embattled handheld maker will presumably be attempting to tread water on the residual sales of the popular Centro smartphone alongside a handful of new Windows Mobile-powered devices, all while presumably prepping the Nova OS for release sometime in 2009. What exactly Palm's upcoming Windows Mobile device lineup looks like remains the most pressing question facing the Palm faithful as we kick off the beginning of the summer months with just a small handful of rumors to contend with.

Palm Treo 850 Image Unmasked

Treo 850 PictureThe seemingly unending source of mobile device revelations that is the Boy Genius Report has uncovered and posted the first set of spy shots of the Palm Treo 850. The device looks to be a manifestation of the previously detailed model codenamed Palm Drucker. At first glance, the device looks to be a welcome depart from the usual Treo stylings and presents a more modern look with a blend of design cues from the Centro. The device would also confirm that Palm has an additional model on tap, in addition to the Treo 800w, first seen last week.

UK: BT launches Total Broadband Anywhere with FREE Windows Mobile smartphones

British Telecom (BT) is a former monopoly in the UK and still most DSL lines in UK are using BT lines, so no wonder that this "anywhere" offering is not the best in the world (note: in the UK still there is no such thing as truly unlimited mobile Internet over cellular networks), but since BT includes Windows Mobile phones for customers, who purchase this service, we are happy to inform you about it! Note that BT is even putting its own branding on HTC-made phones:

Windows 7 Won't Have Compact "MinWin" Kernel

An anonymous reader points us to an interview Microsoft's Windows 7 development chief, Steven Sinofsky, did with CNet. He reveals that Windows 7 will be a further evolution of Vista, and will lose the rumored MinWin kernel. "We're very clear that drivers and software that work on Windows Vista are going to work really well on Windows 7; in fact, they'll work the same. We're going to not introduce additional compatibilities, particularly in the driver model. Windows Vista was about improving those things. We are going to build on the success and the strength of the Windows Server 2008 kernel, and that has all of this work that you've been talking about. The key there is that the kernel in Windows Server 08 is an evolution of the kernel in Windows Vista, and then Windows 7 will be a further evolution of that kernel as well.

It “expects to sell 20 million units in its 2007/2008 fiscal year ending in June, and expects to grow at least 50 percent annually over the next two years. It sold over 11 million units of its Windows Mobile software in its 2006/2007 fiscal year ended June”. While that growth figure is pretty impressive, Reuters goes on to cite analysts saying that “global smartphone unit shipments grew 52.

Mobile group to establish security standards for mobile web

Until recently, the development of mobile-friendly websites has been regarded as nothing more than an irrelevant black art. That has since changed, thanks to more web-capable phones making their way into the mainstream (such as, of course, the iPhone). But the landslide of new and improved mobile sites has opened the doors to a sort of standard-free chaos, where almost anything (that works) goes and security is a second thought. The Open Mobile Terminal Platform (OMTP) group hopes to change that, however, by launching a new initiative that focuses on mobile development without sacrificing important principles like security.
