Palm to sell Centro, iPhone's Rival, through Verizon

Palm will sell its Centro e-mail phone through Verizon Wireless, the second-largest U.S. mobile carrier, stepping up its challenge to Apple's iPhone. The phone, which has a touch screen and keyboard and can connect to the Internet, will go on sale in Verizon stores tomorrow, the companies said in a statement Thursday. The Centro will sell for $99.99 with a service contract. The Centro won customers from the more expensive iPhone in the first quarter, Framingham, Mass.-based research firm IDC said last week. Apple cut the price of its phone, which runs on AT&T's network in the U.S., to $199 from $399 this week to boost sales. Sunnyvale-based Palm had 13.4 percent of the market for so-called smart phones in the first quarter, up from 7.9 percent in the previous period, according to IDC.

Although there have been a few complaints regarding Rogers' pricing plans, most of the calls the company has received about the iPhone have come from customers wanting to know when it will be available and where they can buy it, Rogers spokeswoman Liz Hamilton said.

Even though Rogers' rate plans for iPhone generally angered Canadians, it appears its meager efforts to placate users with a $30 promotional 6GB data plan was enough for "tens of thousands" of Canadian iPhone buyers. According to a Reuters report, Rogers says that it sold out of iPhone stock in most cities, and that the iPhone 3G launch was the "best weekend of handset sales in Rogers' history."
