Over 800 people queue up to buy Apple's iPhone in Tokyo's Omotesando+

TOKYO, July 10-(Kyodo), More than 800 mobile phone buffs eager to buy Apple Inc.'s iPhone 3G were queuing in front of Softbank Mobile Corp.'s flagship store in Tokyo around 10 p.m. Thursday, about nine hours before the shop starts selling the handset.

Best Buy to be first chain to sell coveted iPhone

Best Buy Co. will start selling the iPhone on Sept. 7, becoming first U.S. chain to do so outside of Apple Inc.'s and AT&T Inc.'s own stores. The announcement, expected today expands the availability of Apple's vaunted phone to 970 full-size stores and 16 smaller Best Buy Mobile stores. It's also a coup for the Minneapolis-based chain, which has been upgrading its cellphone departments. "We had a lot of work to do, obviously, to get in a position where Apple and AT&T would feel good about Best Buy Mobile carrying it, and that's what we've done in the last 18 months," said Shawn Score, president of Best Buy Mobile. Best Buy also resells Apple's Mac computers and iPod media players. Apple spokeswoman Natalie Kerris said the long-standing relationship between the companies was the reason Best Buy would now be able to sell the iPhone.

Apple explains iPhone 3G upgrade process

Apple this week began posting information for iPhone users intending to update their device to the new iPhone 3G. A new support document explains how to replace an original iPhone with an iPhone 3G using the same carrier: "If you follow these steps to backup your original iPhone first, and then restore the backup to your iPhone 3G, your saved SMS messages, email accounts, photos, notes, and other personal settings will be present on your iPhone 3G," the company noted. The instructions indicate that iPhone users in the US will not need to transfer their SIM card (a new one will be provided with the iPhone 3G) and describes how to transfer settings, personal info, SMS messages, and other data to the new device using iTunes' backup iPhone feature.

Apple offers iPhone 2.0.2 update via iTunes

Apple on Monday released iPhone 2.0.2, an update to its second-generation software for the original iPhone and iPhone 3G. The update is about 242MB and first appeared via iTunes just after 5PM EST. As is usually the case with iPhone updates, Apple provided few details, saying simply that the update contains "bug fixes," and links to existing online iPhone support resources. Over the weekend the company seeded iPhone v2.1b4, a private beta, to developers, but removed the much anticipated 'push" feature that would allow applications to respond to internet triggers (new email, an IM, etc.) without being open. The major software update along with the unique "push service" was announced in June 2008 at Apple's WWDC and was expected to launch in September, according to Apple CEO Steve Jobs.

Best Buy to Sell iPhones: The Symbiosis Grows

Best Buy (BBY) will start selling Apple’s iPhone in its stores and the relationship between the two parties has become quite symbiotic. For Apple (AAPL), Best Buy is a great distribution channel–Apple Stores are typically located in metropolitan areas and consumers may not stumble on an AT&T (T) store. Meanwhile, Apple is just solidifying an existing Mac distribution partnership with Best Buy by adding the iPhone. - The iPhone will be sold at Best Buy Mobile, which has been rolled out to its 970 stores. Best Buy sells Macs at 600 stores.

Rumour: Apple to get charitable with RED iPhone?

Who knows when the white version will touch down (if at all) in the UK. Still, if you don’t lead a monochrome lifestyle, you’ll be pleased by the strong rumours that Apple is planning to launch a red iPhone for Christmas. Or rather a RED iPhone, as it’ll apparently be part of the charitable (PRODUCT) RED campaign, which Apple has supported in the past with scarlet iPods. It’s a good cause, but does anyone really want a red iPhone? That said, if Apple ever launches a green one that benefits eco charities, I might be tempted to switch to it…

Rogers, Apple see big sales of iPhone

Rogers Wireless Communications Inc. sold out of its initial iPhone stock in a handful of Canadian cities over the weekend after it began selling Apple Inc.'s popular touch screen cellphone on Friday. Rogers declined to prove specific sales figures, however Apple said that more than one million iPhones were sold around the globe during the first three days of sales in 21 countries. "IPhone 3G had a stunning opening weekend," Apple chief executive officer Steve Jobs said in a statement. Apple also announced that more than 10 million applications were downloaded through the company's new App Store, which sells programs and games designed to work on the next-generation iPhone. Neither Rogers nor Apple addressed the crippling server outages which plagued iPhone activations in both the U.

Hackers Post Software to Jailbreak Apple's iPhone 3G

The iPhone Dev Team has posted its PwnageTool 2.0.1 software to jailbreak Apple, Inc.'s latest iPhone operating system 2.0. An unreleased exploit in the iPhone OS was used to allow non-Apple applications to run on Apple's iPhone and iPhone 3G. Contrary to early reports, the hack does not unlock the iPhone 3G to use carriers other than AT&T.

West Coast Report On iPhone Mania

I've been at the Apple store in Palo Alto, Calif. all morning watching the crowds snap up the new iPhone. Some people spent the night in line but there weren't nearly as any people as there were on June 29, last year when Apple released the original iPhone. Still, there are plenty of people in the store and still lined up around the block. It's a party-like atmosphere, especially when someone walks out with their new phone to an ovation from the waiting customers and Apple employees. While I haven't had a chance to put it through all of its paces, I've been using the phone all morning mostly to do radio interviews with CBS stations. The call quality is excellent -- a noticeable improvement over iPhone 1.0. I was able to use the phone to browse the web using both the WiFi network at the store and (after turning off WiFi) the AT&T 3G networ
